Description
Staff members are responsible for developing, managing, and producing content for The Navigator News. This includes generating story ideas, assigning and editing articles, and ensuring all content meets professional journalistic standards, including AP Style and evidence-based reporting.
Staff members oversee their section from concept to publication and collaborate with team members, including the Layout/Design Editor, to meet monthly production deadlines (8 issues per academic year).
In addition, students support general newsroom and Student Life operations, which may include content planning, communications, social media, distribution, and other departmental projects as assigned. This role provides hands‑on experience in teamwork, time management, and meeting deadlines in a collaborative environment. Once hired, staff members may take on additional responsibilities, subject to approval by The Navigator News advisor.
Description of Essential Functions (critical tasks)
Generate and refine story ideas for each publication cycle
Assign and manage articles for staff writers
Edit content for clarity, accuracy, tone, and AP Style consistency
Write engaging and accurate headlines
Ensure all content is based on credible, verifiable sources
Attend and actively participate in weekly meetings
Collaborate with the Layout/Design Editor to finalize each issue
Support newsroom operations, including planning, communication, and distribution
Assist with Student Life initiatives, social media, and special projects
Complete and submit timesheets accurately and on time
Follow all The Navigator News policies, procedures, and editorial guidelines
Perform other duties as assigned to support the office or department
Specific Functional Job Requirements
Education Requirements
HS Diploma or GED.
Experience Requirements
Newsroom experience preferred. Good spoken English skills. Ability to meet deadlines. Willingness to learn.
Knowledge
Knowledge of AP Style preferred.
Skills
Excellent written communication skills.
Personal Requirements
Ability to work as part of a team.
