Senior Director, Brand Voice & Identity

The Senior Director, Brand Voice/Identity is the owner and guardian of DavidYurman’s verbal brand identity. This role defines how the brand speaks, tells stories, adapts tone across audiences and channels, and ensures language is distinctive, elevated, precise and commercially clear across all 360 touchpoints.

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve the verbal brand identity across all verticals, including e‑commerce, social, retail, events, CRM, PR, clienteling, special projects, men’s jewelry, high jewelry, icons, gifting, heritage and seasonal campaigns.
  • Define voice architecture: principles, tone ranges, standards, messaging hierarchy, storytelling frameworks, channel rules and approved language systems.
  • Build clear language systems for each channel, ensuring consistency at the brand level while allowing vertical flex.
  • Translate strategy, campaign concepts, insights and product priorities into actionable voice direction for the team and cross‑functional partners.
  • Collaborate with Creative leadership to shape narrative expression of major campaigns, launches and brand moments.
  • Identify and correct inconsistent, overly promotional, generic, editorial or unclear voice, providing clear guidance.
  • Maintain a centralized verbal identity system with guidelines, examples, banned phrases, approved terminology and channel‑specific tone guidance.
  • Develop storytelling frameworks for hero products, icons, men’s jewelry, high jewelry, gifting, seasonal launches, craftsmanship, materials, design inspiration and heritage.
  • Define role of language within each vertical: emotional world‑building, product education, conversion and brand relevance.
  • Set and enforce brand voice standards for all copy, holding the team accountable for quality, editing rigor, consistency, timing and accuracy.
  • Review, edit and approve high‑visibility copy to ensure it is elevated, precise, grammatically correct, legally sound and aligned to the DavidYurman voice.
  • Educate writers to sharpen ideas, improve structure, write with restraint and understand language performance across channels.
  • Lead, manage and mentor the Brand Voice team, setting clear standards, overseeing workload, prioritization, approvals and delivery.
  • Build repeatable processes for briefs, copy development, editing, feedback, approvals and final delivery.
  • Partner with Project Management, Creative, Marketing, Merchandising, Product Development, Design, E‑commerce, CRM, Social, Retail, Events, PR, Communications, Legal and other teams to ensure consistent brand voice.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in copywriting, brand voice, creative strategy or verbal identity, ideally within luxury, jewelry, fashion or a premium brand environment.
  • Proven experience owning or building a brand voice system across multiple channels and business verticals.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, grammar, proofreading and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong copy judgment and the ability to raise language quality quickly and decisively.
  • Experience leading copy teams and holding writers accountable to standards, deadlines and execution.
  • Deep understanding of luxury positioning, product storytelling and how language creates desire.
  • Ability to balance brand elevation with commercial clarity.
  • Strong understanding of e‑commerce, CRM, social, retail, events and clienteling communication needs.
  • Experience defining tone by channel, audience, product category and business objective.
  • Strong presentation skills and ability to articulate voice strategy to senior stakeholders.
  • Highly organized, detail‑oriented, collaborative and comfortable managing multiple workstreams.
  • Experience partnering with Creative, Marketing, Merchandising, E‑commerce, Social, PR, Retail, Events, Legal and Product teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Creative Writing or related field (required).

Success Measures

DavidYurman’s verbal brand identity will be clear, ownable and consistently applied across teams. Copy across all touchpoints will feel connected, elevated and consistent. The Brand Voice team will produce stronger work with fewer subjective revisions, and product storytelling will become more precise, emotional and commercially effective. Cross‑functional partners will understand how to apply the voice and when to seek guidance. Language will drive brand equity and business performance.

Estimated salary range: $178–$220k (base pay), with additional benefits including healthcare, 401(k) plan, bonus, employee discounts, paid time off, sick time and more.
