Position Summary
The Coordinator of Liturgy and Music is responsible for collaborating with clergy, staff, ministry leaders, volunteers, and musicians to plan and execute parish liturgies and music. The goal is to create a dynamic and inspiring worship community, especially through a music ministry program, for the parish community. The Coordinator of Music and Liturgy supports the gospel message through song and challenges the assembly to live it more fully. The music ministry should stir the soul and inspire people toward faith, hope and love in Jesus Christ. This role requires the ability to work in a Catholic environment of kindness, compassion, respect, integrity, mutual charity, and dignity.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge
High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree in music and/or music education preferred.
Must be a practicing Catholic, a member in good standing of a Catholic parish.
Thorough knowledge of and commitment to the Roman Catholic liturgical norms of the church; familiarity with sacred music and its appropriate use.
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of Catholic-ecclesial life and structure, along with knowledge of church organization and operational procedures.
Skills
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Ability to implement large program‑wide events.
Proficient in playing piano and sight‑reading.
Experience training a choir.
Strong singing ability with solid vocal performance skills.
Abilities
Organize, motivate, and sustain volunteers in the liturgical ministry.
Lead and form choirs of parishioners with varying musical proficiency.
Duties and Responsibilities
Support the mission of St. Bernard Parish
Participate as a member of the parish team in planning and decision‑making and leadership team meetings.
Perform duties within a predefined budget.
Collaborate with parish staff and integrate music into parish ministries as applicable.
Be a resource person to parish staff on issues related to liturgy, music, and discipleship.
Continually pursue spiritual and professional development and renewal.
Perform related work as required.
Liturgy
Write petitions every week and for Holy days.
Seasonally update the liturgy of the Word; prepare presider’s notes and send them out.
Arrange for priest coverages and reconciliations as needed for the liturgy department.
Order supplies as necessary including books for Mass & choir.
Recruit, train, supervise and schedule, in a timely manner, all lay ministers required for liturgies, services, and devotions (Lectors, Ushers, Alter servers, Sacristans, Cantors, musicians).
Train and manage liturgical ministers as necessary, and oversee the training program for all ministries.
Supply information to create worship aids for funerals and Holy Hour.
Plan and coordinate seasonal decorations for church and narthex for Christmas, Easter, etc., including ordering of flowers, plants, or materials needed for decorating.
Serve as liturgy resource person for the school and religious education, time permitting.
Music
Plan and play music for weekday Masses as desired by the Pastor.
Schedule and manage all musicians.
Coordinate Stations of the Cross, Holy Days, and wedding music, ensuring licence and recording guidelines are met.
Serve as sound technician/technology person for the parish, maintaining and operating all equipment used in church.
Maintain all instruments used in church, including tuning the piano.
Keep reprint and streaming licences up to date and file required reports to licensing companies.
Create worship aids/programs/song sheets for weekend and holy day liturgies, reconciliation services, and any other celebrations as needed.
Direct choir and/or choral groups for Saturday/Sunday liturgies and special celebrations.
Plan the music program for weekend and holy day liturgies in accordance with the liturgical calendar and special service themes; also for First Eucharist, Reconciliation, Confirmation and other scheduled prayer or devotional services as needed.
Work with the Pastoral Associate as a resource person for the planning of funerals.
Funerals
Pull together information for worship aids.
Coordinate and practice with Funeral Choir.
Sing and play for funeral or find an alternate.
Audio/Visual
Coordinate livestreaming.
Create visuals for Mass, Holy Hour, and other events.
Train and schedule all volunteers.
Create and program material for the media board in the narthex.
Perform any other duties as deemed necessary by the Pastor.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; sit; use hands to handle objects, reach with hands and arms; and talk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and distance vision.
Typical Working Conditions
The person in this position works in an inside office environment, alone at times and frequently with a group. Normal hours are 40 hours per week with a flexible schedule. Some weekend hours.
Nature of Supervision Received
Receives minimal supervision. The incumbent must establish priorities and independently set daily objectives to meet deadlines and address urgent situations as they occur.
Judgment Exercised / Decisions Made
Considerable judgment and independent decision‑making are required regarding compliance with policies. Decisions are moderately complex. Requires ability to thoroughly investigate and analyze problems and recommend the proper course of action. Judgment and tact must be used in communication of policies and procedures.
Financial Responsibility
Responsible for effective use of budgeted resources.
