Music Director

Position Summary

The Music Director is responsible for leading, developing, and executing the musical vision of the church across all worship services, special events, and ministry environments. This role combines musical excellence, spiritual leadership, volunteer development, production collaboration, and organizational management to create engaging worship experiences that support the church's mission. The Music Director oversees worship musicians, develops custom arrangements and tracks, recruits and trains volunteers, and ensures a high standard of musical execution across all campuses and venues.

Essential Responsibilities Worship Service Leadership

  • Direct music during weekend services and special events.
  • Provide musical leadership during rehearsals, sound checks, and live services.
  • Coordinate with Worship Pastors, Creative Arts, Production, and Campus teams to execute worship experiences.
  • Ensure consistent musical quality and excellence across all worship environments.
  • Serve as the primary music leader during services, rehearsals, conferences, and church-wide events.

Music Production & Arrangement

  • Build, program, edit, and maintain Ableton Live sessions for all worship services.
  • Create and manage multitrack playback systems, click tracks, guide tracks, and MIDI automation.
  • Produce custom song arrangements tailored to the church's worship style and service flow.
  • Develop transitions, medleys, intros, outros, spontaneous worship sections, and special musical moments.
  • Create stems, charts, chord sheets, rehearsal mixes, and reference recordings for musicians.
  • Manage song libraries, keys, tempos, arrangements, and worship planning resources.
  • Collaborate with production teams to integrate lighting, video, and automation elements within Ableton workflows.

Musician Recruitment & Development

  • Recruit, audition, onboard, and evaluate musicians.
  • Build a healthy pipeline of volunteer musicians for all instruments.
  • Develop training pathways for new musicians and emerging leaders.
  • Conduct regular coaching sessions to improve musicianship, stage presence, professionalism, and spiritual maturity.
  • Mentor section leaders and develop future music directors.
  • Foster a culture of excellence, teamwork, humility, and servant leadership.

Rehearsal Management

  • Plan and lead weekly rehearsals.
  • Prepare charts, tracks, and rehearsal materials in advance.
  • Communicate musical expectations clearly and effectively.
  • Provide constructive feedback and coaching to team members.
  • Maintain a positive and encouraging rehearsal environment.

Team Leadership

  • Lead and care for volunteer musicians and music leaders.
  • Build strong relationships with team members through regular communication and pastoral care.
  • Create a culture of accountability, excellence, and spiritual growth.
  • Collaborate with campus worship leaders and ministry staff to ensure alignment.
  • Participate in leadership meetings, planning sessions, and creative reviews.

Service Planning & Administration

  • Assist in worship set planning and song selection.
  • Maintain worship song databases, scheduling systems, and planning tools.
  • Ensure all charts, tracks, patches, and resources are current and accurate.
  • Coordinate musician scheduling and team assignments.
  • Manage licensing, song reporting, and music-related administrative tasks.
  • Oversee equipment inventories related to the music department.

Creative & Special Projects

  • Support worship recordings, live albums, and special music projects.
  • Arrange and direct music for conferences, holiday services, concerts, and special events.
  • Collaborate on original songs and creative initiatives.
  • Help shape the musical identity and culture of the church.
