Transmission Lines Engineer
PNM is looking for a Transmission Lines Engineer who will perform complex engineering activities and projects requiring strong application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient, and economical manner.

Responsibilities

Design transmission routes and lines, including structure types, configurations, and profiles, and review design packages for accuracy.

Establish and apply requirements and standards for new or existing transmission lines, modifications/extensions, and associated structures and hardware.

Resolve emergent issues on transmission line construction projects and failures at existing locations and equipment.

Perform lightning studies and interpret or peer‑review lightning study results.

Create bill of materials and equipment lists for line construction projects.

Work with OEMs and vendors to identify offerings and match them to project needs.

Calculate facility ratings based on material properties, configurations, and ambient conditions.

Identify required outages and clearance points for greenfield and brownfield projects coordinated with Project Management and Control Center.

Perform field inspections and verifications of projects and delivered material to ensure compliance with design standards and specifications.

Ensure compliance with utility, safety regulations, and state/federal rules (IEEE, NESC, FERC/NERC).

Provide technical support and direction to field personnel and contractors, and train less‑experienced staff.

Communicate engineering ideas, recommendations, and evaluations to diverse internal and external audiences.

Apply engineering expertise to improve or develop new standards and technology solutions.

Perform all work in a safe and timely manner.

Key Competencies

Demonstrated problem‑solving skills, organization, and attention to detail.

Proficiency with PLS‑CADD, PLS‑POLE, MFAD, SAG10, and estimating experience.

Ability to read, interpret, and apply national, state, and local codes and standards (IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, ACI, AISC, ASME, NACE).

Translate electrical theory and physics to utility applications for system reliability improvement.

Make informed repair decisions following company protocols.

Comfortable working around high voltage (up to 345 kV) facilities and equipment.

Demonstrated leadership skills, self‑motivation, and interpersonal skills.

Teamwork capability with various departments and personnel levels.

Job Details
Salary: DOE.

Personnel in this position may be covered by NERC CIP cyber security standards. Candidates must pass a personnel risk assessment, including identity verification and a criminal background check, and attend cyber security training. Annual training is required. Depending on the location, a credit check may also be required.

Qualifications

Minimum Education

– Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution, plus 4 + years of experience or 3 + years with a Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certificate or 3 + years with a Master’s Degree.

Preferred Advanced Education

– Master’s Degree in Engineering, professional engineer license in New Mexico.

Certificates & Licenses

– FE certificate preferred; drivers license required and must meet company driving record requirements.

Communication Skills

– Ability to read, interpret documents; write reports, correspondence, speeches, and presentations; speak effectively before varied audiences.

Computer Skills

– Proficiency with electrical engineering design programs (PLS‑CADD, PLS‑POLE, MFAD, SAG10, AutoCAD); word processing, database, and spreadsheet software.

Analysis & Problem Solving

– Apply common sense to complex instructions and solve problems involving multiple variables.

Physical Demands

– Frequent sitting, standing, walking, exposure to outdoor elements, lifting up to 50 lbs, crouching, bending, climbing, and working at heights; protective equipment required (hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection).

Work Environment

– Time divided between office and field; exposure to high voltage facilities, computers, office equipment, and construction equipment.
