Music Section Editor (Full-time)
Portland Mercury is looking for a full‑time Music Section Editor to join our small, dynamic, hard‑working editorial staff. This role is ideal for an engaging writer with deep knowledge of local and national music who believes that a strong arts scene makes for a stronger city. Experience and passion for other arts and culture areas (food, nightlife, comedy, theater, film, books, visual art) is a plus.

Job Description
The Music Section Editor will write snappy, smart pieces on the music scene and other cultural topics, write reviews, blurbs, breaking news, and help produce print products and contribute to the weekly entertainment calendar. The editor must be familiar with, participate in, and have deep knowledge of Portland’s vibrant, multi‑faced music scene, be organized and versatile, and handle deadlines with little hand‑holding.
Job Requirements
Snappy, smart writing paired with a passion for digging deep into the music scene and other areas of cultural significance. Ability to write about various music genres with respect and through research.
At least two years of experience in culture writing; special consideration for newsroom experience.
Extremely organized and versatile, able to write longer reviews as well as short blurbs, and report on breaking music news.
Exceptional grammar and style skills, and ability to proofread colleagues’ work.
Enthusiasm, professionalism, strong people skills, ability to handle critical feedback from readers, and a good sense of humor.
Previous editing experience recommended, and demonstrable ability to manage freelancers.
