HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division is the largest industrial employer in Virginia. The Role
Writes, rewrites and/or edits technical documents such as technical procedure manuals, user manuals, programming manuals, service manuals, operational specifications, and related technical publications to communicate clearly and effectively technical specifications and instructions to a wide range of audiences. Acquires subject knowledge by interviewing product developers, observing production methods, referring to technical specifications, blueprints, engineering illustrations, and trade journals. Oversees preparation of illustrative materials, selecting drawings, sketches, diagrams and charts. Conducts quality review of materials.

This position is intended for the Propulsion Plant Monitoring and Control (PPMC) Software Planning and Coordination team within the Integrated Propulsion Plant Instrumentation and Control (IPPIC) section of Department E50 – Propulsion and Reactor Engineering Planning Yard (PREPY). The incumbent will be responsible for technical writing in support of the PPMC System Configuration, Administration, and Operation Technical Manual as well as configuration management of various chapters of the Propulsion Plant Manual, working closely with lead engineers for guidance and direction. Responsibilities may also include preparation and/or peer review of approval letters, interdepartmental memos, liaison action request responses, process guides, etc. The ideal candidate will also communicate with the Navy, NNL, and management/engineers across the PREPY and other NNS departments during regular status meetings and review cycles.

Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of relevant exempt experience; Master’s Degree and 4 years of relevant professional experience

One of the following may be used as equivalent to Bachelor's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:

Associate's Degree or other formal 2‑year program and 2 years of relevant exempt experience or 4 years of relevant non‑exempt experience

Military Paygrade E‑5 or above military experience

High School/GED and 4 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant exempt experience

High School/GED and 8 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant non‑exempt experience

Nice to Have

Must have strong written and verbal communication skills

Must have technical writing experience

Must have a high degree of organizational skills and attention to detail

Software testing experience is a plus

Configuration/change management experience a plus

Requirements management experience a plus

Knowledge management experience a plus
