Overview
The Forward is seeking a Yiddish speaker to help us serve more people who are interested in watching, hearing and reading about the language and its importance in Jewish cultural life.
The part-time role will focus on producing short videos and writing that speak to lovers of Yiddish, whether they’ve just discovered the language or heard their grandparents speak it. The role may involve monitoring social media for conversations about Yiddish, tracking cultural updates on music, theater, film and literature related to Yiddish, and engaging the Yiddish community to generate ideas and stories. The Forward’s newsroom is in New York City, with a generous hybrid policy for area residents, but we are open to qualified candidates who work remotely from other locations with some visits to New York as needed.
Responsibilities
Produce short videos and written content addressing audiences interested in Yiddish, including essays in Yiddish or English and on-camera interviews.
Monitor social media conversations about Yiddish and track cultural updates in music, theater, film and literature; engage the Yiddish community to generate ideas and stories.
Report on cultural events, cover new developments in the Yiddish world, and support editorial work by sharing news briefs, Word of the Day videos, cooking or food content, and other engaging coverage for Yiddishists of all ages and language levels.
Assist with in-person events as needed and collaborate with the Yiddish editor on editorial direction.
Qualifications
Comfortable writing personal essays in Yiddish or English; capable of interviewing people on camera and reporting on cultural events.
Solid grasp of style and grammar in both Yiddish and English; knowledge of Yiddish literature, songs and traditions is advantageous.
Ability to track and cover developments in the Yiddish world and to contribute to a broad, engaging coverage strategy.
Part-time availability (approximately 15 hours per week); compensation at $25 per hour; member of the News Guild.
