Job Summary: Reporting to the Vice President of Philanthropy, the Director of Sponsored Programs provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all pre‑and post‑award sponsored programs and research funding activities across JohnMuirHealth. The role ensures compliance with federal, state, foundation, and industry sponsor requirements while supporting physicians, investigators, and clinical and operational leaders in securing and stewarding external funding. The Director serves as a collaborative partner across the health system, advancing JohnMuirHealth’s mission, clinical excellence, and research and innovation priorities.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for all pre‑and post‑award sponsored programs and research funding activities across JohnMuirHealth.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, foundation, and industry sponsor regulations in a healthcare or clinical research environment.
- Support physicians, investigators, and clinical and operational leaders in securing and stewarding external funding.
- Act as a collaborative partner across the health system to advance mission, clinical excellence, research, and innovation priorities.
- Promote belonging and inclusion initiatives and work with marginalized communities.
- Apply strong problem‑solving and analytical skills to create solutions for complex situations.
- Demonstrate superior listening skills, diplomacy, and tact to build strong relationships with funders and internal staff including physicians and staff.
- Exhibit excellent verbal and written communication skills with a strong customer‑service orientation.
- Maintain accuracy and speed using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and advanced knowledge of generating reports, documents, and budgets.
- Manage database systems and, where applicable, experience with The Raiser’s Edge or other fundraising or CRM software.
- Work independently and collaboratively with a high degree of professionalism, multi‑task effectively and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
- Apply reading, writing, research, and editing skills with impeccable attention to detail.
- Exhibit a strong work ethic and the initiative to creatively solve problems, improve efficiencies, and exceed expectations while maintaining high levels of professional and personal integrity.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (required).
- 7–10 years of progressively responsible experience in sponsored programs, research administration, or healthcare grants management (required).
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, foundation, and industry sponsor regulations in a healthcare or clinical research environment (preferred).
- Proven leadership and people‑management experience (required).
- Experience within an integrated health system or academic medical center (preferred).
- CA Driver License – Department of Motor Vehicles.
Compensation and Benefits
Exempt Salaried position; 40 hours per week. Pay Range: $159,863.00 – $239,794.00. Salary is based on demonstrated/relevant experience and/or licensure and will be adjusted to the local market if hired outside of the Bay Area. Competitive salary and benefits package available.
