Specialist, Chinese Paintings

Christie’s, the world’s largest art business, is seeking an experienced Specialist to source and sell Chinese paintings in both New York and Hong KONG sales worldwide. The role focuses on development of sourcing and client engagement strategies for the Americas region, building relationships with collectors, dealers, institutions, and marketing the work across auction, online, and private sales.

Responsibilities

  • Source Chinese paintings for New York and Hong KONG sales (auction, online, and private sales) in the Chinese Paintings Department.
  • Develop sourcing and client engagement strategies for the Americas region.
  • Build and maintain relationships with collectors, dealers, advisors, corporations, and institutions.
  • Generate new long-term business opportunities by connecting with active clients and re-engaging with inactive clients through appraisals and auction estimates.
  • Conduct academic research and prepare bilingual catalogue notes (Mandarin and English) and bilingual marketing and corporate communication materials.
  • Assist with department catalogue production and layout.
  • Participate in department meetings to determine value, condition, and marketability of Chinese paintings.
  • Co-ordinate pre-sale exhibition set-up and targeted marketing efforts.
  • Market and pre-sell artwork to clients during New York and Hong KONG sale weeks.
  • Participate in telephone bidding with clients during New York and Hong KONG auctions in both English and Chinese.
  • Represent Christie’s at events, art fairs, and other functions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Art History or a related field and five (5) years of post-bachelor, progressive, related work experience.
  • Five (5) years of experience as a Chinese paintings specialist with a global auction house, identifying, researching and evaluating works of art for appraisal purposes, and preparing auction catalogues.
  • Four (4) years of experience developing and managing domestic and international client relationships, and gathering business intelligence to identify relevant markets for Chinese paintings.
  • Up to 30% domestic and international travel required.
  • Ability to read and write Simplified and Traditional Chinese, and speak Mandarin fluently.

Work Week: 40 hrs/week (Mon-Fri, 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.)

Salary: $131,070 - $141,070 per year (range does not include discretionary bonus compensation and overtime pay).
