Community Connections Coordinator

Metro Caring works with our community to meet people's immediate need for nutritious, culturally relevant food while building a movement to end hunger at its root. Our innovative programming spans Healthy Food Access, Nutrition Education, Community Connections, and Organizing. We know that hunger is not caused by a lack of food—but by poverty, unaffordable housing, systemic racism, and inequities baked into our food systems. That's why we focus on bold, community-driven solutions that promote food justice and economic equity.
The Community Connections Coordinator plays a key operational support role in the day-to-day functioning of the Welcome Center and Fresh Food Market experience. This role helps coordinate frontline operations, support volunteer engagement, maintain systems and workflows, and assist with onboarding and training efforts for Community Connections staff and volunteers. The Coordinator serves as a collaborative resource for the team and helps ensure operational consistency, communication, and compassionate community care in alignment with Metro Caring's values. This position does not include formal staff supervision, but does include coordination of volunteers, operational leadership during Market shifts, and support for frontline problem-solving and communication.
Key responsibilities include:
Support the daily coordination of Welcome Center and Fresh Food Market operations to ensure a welcoming, organized, and efficient experience for community members.
Assist with creating and maintaining staff and volunteer shift coverage plans and daily operational workflows.
Coordinate opening, closing, and transition communication between shifts to support operational readiness and continuity.
Monitor front-end flow and assist with real-time problem-solving to minimize barriers and strengthen community experience.
Support frontline communication and help direct volunteers and community members during Market operations.
Help maintain organized systems, supplies, signage, resource materials, and communication tools that support frontline operations.
Serve as the team lead during key market hours when the Senior Manager of Community Connections is unavailable, providing guidance to Community Connections Assistants, volunteers, and the shift lead.
Required qualifications/skills/abilities include:
Warm, welcoming, and adaptable personality with the ability to engage effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences.
Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate tasks, support teams, or guide volunteers in community-facing environments.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Ability to remain calm, grounded, and solutions-oriented in high-stress or rapidly changing situations.
Commitment to equity, inclusion, and ongoing learning around issues of race, class, language access, and systemic barriers.
Receptive to feedback and committed to continuous personal and professional growth within an IDEA framework (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access)
