SUMMARY
The Assistant Production Editor has primary responsibility for coordinating print and/or electronic publications from receipt of manuscript through post‑production. This includes, among other tasks, assessing the material, proofing, and checking copy, working with electronic files, electronic posting, quality control, and project management. The Assistant Production Editor initiates activity to head off and solve problems and to avoid delays and keeps management apprised of these issues. They are responsible and accountable for completing each project within budget and on schedule while maintaining the required level of quality. Assistant Production Editors at the AMS are expected to handle both book and journal manuscripts and, at times, special publications or other projects as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Editorial:
Proofread, copyedit, and/or check book and journal material for adherence to quality standards, following the guidelines set for each project.
Technical:
Work with Production databases and with AMS‑specific technical systems while handling projects.
Prepare digital files for the printer.
Administrative:
Work to complete assigned tasks on schedule and within budget; and notify appropriate staff responsible for the project of foreseeable delays and/or budget overruns.
Work with other Production Editors and supervisors to resolve problems as they arise, in a timely and efficient manner.
Maintain accuracy and completeness of tracking systems and databases.
Communicate with other Production Editors regarding assigned tasks.
Perform quality control checks throughout the production process and communicate this information to the Production Editor of the project.
Contribute information toward status reports, help prepare cost sheets, order CIP data, follow up on permissions issues, and perform other administrative tasks as required.
Participate in and complete training programs as directed.
Keep abreast of publishing trends outside the AMS.
Perform other or similar related duties as requested or assigned.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS
Work in a team setting with technical staff, graphic arts staff, print shop staff, production staff, book acquisitions staff, other AMS staff in Providence and Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Collaborate with authors, editors, vendors.

QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent of related experience.
1‑3 years of publishing, editorial or related field.
Excellent command of English language, grammar, and usage.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Superior organizational skills and attention to detail.
Working knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style or comparable editorial style manual preferred.
Ability to work with a diverse group of people both inside and outside of the AMS.
Ability to manage multiple projects under deadline pressure in a fast‑paced work environment.
General knowledge of scholarly publishing both in print and on the Web.
Working knowledge of LaTeX a plus.
Familiar with high‑level mathematical material for print and online publication a plus.
Working knowledge of Adobe Suite.
Must possess ability to work under pressure at various times of the year.

Capable of reliable attendance in the office during scheduled work hours.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS
Typical office environment, climate‑controlled, minimal noise.
Extended work hours may be required to meet project deadlines or resolve unexpected problems.
This position is required to be in‑office.
