About the Role

Gateway Playhouse is hiring an Assistant Technical Director to support the Technical Director across all areas of production. You will work in the shop and on stage building scenery, hanging and running lights, setting up sound, and helping load shows in and out. This is a hands-on role for someone with technical theater experience who is ready to do a bit of everything and learn on the job.


Responsibilities

Carpentry and scenic construction in the shop and on stage

Hang and cable lighting; basic lighting console programming

Assist Sound system setup, including setting up and mixing line audio, plus basic sound system design.

Run and connect XLR, DMX, and RJ45

Source and pick up materials for the shop

Support load-ins and load-outs (install and strike)

Keep to the production schedule across shop days, rehearsals, and performances

Pitch in wherever needed and be willing to take on just about anything


Requirements

Technical theater experience, with a working knowledge of basic tech

Basic carpentry and scenic construction skills

Comfortable with power tools (saws, screw gun, and similar)

Able to lift at least 50 lbs

Able to climb ladders and operate a man lift

Able to hang lights and curtains

A valid driver's license and reliable transportation

A flexible schedule (see below)

Willingness to learn specialized skills such as lighting programming and sound design is a strong plus


Schedule

This role requires a flexible schedule that follows the production calendar:

Daytime shop and stage work: roughly 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, at least 2 to 3 days a week

Evenings and weekends: rehearsals, performances, and load-ins and load-outs (install and strike)

Tech week: long days when needed, for example 9 a.m. in the shop through a 10 p.m. strike. Not every day, but expected during tech.


Compensation

A flat summer stipend of $2,500.

Possible additional compensation per show or series

A clear path to a full-time, salaried role for the right person who proves themselves over the summer
