3D Character Artist

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a 3D Character Artist based in Canada.
This role is an opportunity for a highly creative 3D artist to bring compelling characters to life for video games in a production-driven, collaborative environment. You will contribute to the full character creation pipeline, from sculpting and modeling to texturing and optimization for real-time engines. The work focuses on delivering high-quality, stylized or realistic characters depending on project needs. You will collaborate closely with technical artists, animators, and level designers to ensure visual and technical consistency. The environment encourages creativity, adaptability, and continuous improvement of artistic workflows. Your contributions will directly impact the visual identity and immersion of interactive game worlds.
Accountabilities:
You will be responsible for creating high-quality 3D character assets optimized for real-time engines, ensuring both artistic fidelity and technical performance across projects.
Produce 3D character models with a focus on faces, clothing, physics, and anatomical accuracy
Develop blend shapes, clean topology, and optimized meshes for animation and gameplay use
Create high-quality textures and perform UV unwrapping for character assets
Design and implement PBR materials for characters in line with project standards
Collaborate with level designers to ensure character integration within environments
Work with technical artists to define shaders, tools, and pipeline improvements
Identify artistic requirements and contribute to maintaining visual quality targets
Requirements:

You are an experienced 3D artist with strong technical and artistic foundations in character creation for games, capable of working independently and adapting to different visual styles.
5+ years of experience in the video game industry as a character artist
Strong proficiency with Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter, and Marvelous Designer
Experience working with Unreal Engine 5 and Unity
Strong understanding of human and animal anatomy, movement, and proportion
Solid knowledge of traditional drawing principles including light, color, form, and perspective
Good understanding of PBR workflows and real-time rendering constraints
Ability to communicate clearly and translate complex ideas into understandable concepts
Strong autonomy, organizational skills, and ability to manage deadlines effectively
Adaptability to different artistic directions and visual styles
Familiarity with Substance Designer, shader construction, rigging, and animation is a plus
