Suburban News Reporter - Wichita, KS. The Wichita Eagle seeks a high-energy, self-starting reporter to cover the suburbs, uncover stories that matter to residents, and produce frequent, engaging pieces across formats.
All reporting work will ethically incorporate AI tools and other automation to streamline source building and elevate journalism quality.
Responsibilities

Identify and cover stories that build readership and affect community quality of life, covering topics such as development, education, safety, politics, dining and local business.
Gather material by immersing in community events, engaging residents for direct input, and using callouts and other engagement tools.
Produce multiple quick stories each week while pursuing larger, enterprising angles.
Write in a variety of media and engagement styles, including service-journalism style explainers and fact‑checks.
Work collaboratively with the news team to meet deadlines and maintain media quality.
Qualifications

Strong writing and reporting skills, excellent news judgment, and ability to shape stories that resonate.
Commitment to accuracy, fairness and ethical use of sources.
Ability to work quickly and meet strict deadlines.
Experience using varied media tools and engagement platforms.
Track record of innovation, learning, and applying new technologies, especially AI.
Deep understanding of audience lenses and ability to identify target audiences.
Ability to build source networks and continuously generate story ideas.
Knowledge of public records laws and ability to file relevant requests.
Comfort with a demanding, fast-paced, evolving news environment.
Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field.
1-3 years of reporting experience in a digital-first environment (preferred).
Familiarity with accountability journalism (preferred).
Reliable transportation, valid driver's license and vehicle insurance.
