Job Overview

The Wall Street Journal seeks a New York‑based style and fashion columnist on its Features & WSJ. Magazine team to produce engaging, well‑observed columns and coverage on fashion and style moments in broader culture. The role covers both men’s and women’s fashion and style, requires a high‑metabolism feature reporter with a sense of whimsy, and emphasizes the ability to interpret visual ideas vividly across platforms for a national news‑oriented audience.
Responsibilities

Report, write and fact‑check one column per week covering trends, people, news events or conversations in the style and fashion world.
Create highly shareable, witty, ambitious story ideas with clear news value and elegant execution.
Maintain a deep knowledge of key industry players and a strong roster of sources and contacts to generate story ideas and secure exclusive, access‑driven content.
Write a mix of feature stories, whimsical essays, interviews, and long‑lead pieces such as sprawling profiles or trend features for WSJ. Magazine.
Collaborate with Features editors and the style and culture teams across global bureaus.
Develop angles no one else is chasing into engaging reads and amplify profiles, trends or event stories with humanizing detail.
Use audience data and metrics to inform storytelling while maintaining the journal’s voice, tone, and standards.
Uphold newsroom policies and procedures around ethics and conduct.
Qualifications

At least five years’ experience covering a relevant beat, including essays or columns, feature stories, and enterprise or longer‑form pieces.
Proven history of finding unexpected takes on style, fashion, or larger creative‑culture worlds and a keen eye for visually intriguing stories.
Strong contacts and a relentless drive to make stories happen.
Sense of humor with a demonstrated ability to find clever, intelligent angles within widely covered topics.
Meticulous approach to fact‑checking and a commitment to accuracy, fairness, and quality.
Understanding of digital audiences and visual storytelling across platforms.
Collaborative, upbeat, entrepreneurial attitude conducive to growing and evolving coverage needs.
Benefits

Base pay range: $120,000 – $160,000 annually. Bonus‑eligible roles have targets based on market benchmarks and individual contributions. Benefits‑eligible roles receive a comprehensive package covering health, retirement, wellbeing, and more.
