Political Opinion Columnist

The Political Columnist position is a specialized position within the Opinion section dedicated to covering political issues. This position requires a developed understanding of San Luis Obispo, California, and American politics, as well as strong writing skills and a sense of newsworthiness.
This position is not limited to applicants of any one particular political viewpoint.
Columnists are expected to:
Produce at least one column roughly every two weeks
Pitch their potential ideas to their editor (typically at least a week in advance)
Stay aware of current local, state, and national political trends
Serving on Mustang News’ Editorial Board, which decides and writes endorsements
Responsibilities while writing include, but are not limited to:
Conceiving and planning story ideas
Interviewing sources
Writing, capturing, and editing content.
Political Columnists are expected to submit high-quality work; these should be thoughtful pieces backed up by ideas, sources and facts. The political columnists will be responsible for all these duties and any other duties as assigned.
Compensation:This position is currently unpaid, but there are opportunities to grow within the organization to a paid position.
