Breaking News reporter, The Dallas Morning News Competitive and aggressive reporter needed to join the Breaking & Trending team in the fourth-largest metro in the .
The Dallas Morning News is looking for a reporter who can cover a range of breaking news in the nation’s fourth-largest metro area. Our 13-member Breaking & Trending team is at the heart of the newsroom and is crucial to getting us off to a fast start on major news. The ideal candidate is fast, accurate and aggressive in seeking stories that begin with the initial post and lead to meaningful follow-up coverage. You should function as part of a team, boast a high metabolism for news and have a strong knowledge of how to engage audiences.
What will you do? Break news around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area

Go to the scene of breaking news to provide details of events and develop sourcing

Post news quickly and work with others on the team to develop it in real time

Look for and write smart second- and subsequent-day follow-ups to breaking news stories

Develop source networks with key agencies in Dallas and the metropolitan area to build faster awareness of breaking stories

Take video from the scene of breaking news

Produce stand-up videos that add context to the news

Work with reporters on other teams to provide breaking coverage and add depth to stories from an array of desks

What will it take to be successful Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism or a related field

At least three years of experience in journalism or a related field, preferably covering breaking news

An understanding of digital analytics

An understanding of SEO best practices

The ability to manage multiple stories of different complexities at the same time

The ability to process key facts and write quickly

Strong writing skills

A collaborative approach to journalism

Experience filing open records requests and interpreting information in public records

A driver’s license and reliable transportation

Deep knowledge of North Texas preferred
