Technical Director
Arts Center of Kershaw County
The Arts Center of Kershaw County seeks a skilled and collaborative Technical Director to lead the technical production aspects of its theatre, concert, educational, and special event programming. This position oversees scenic construction, lighting and sound implementation, production budgeting, technical operations, and facility production resources while working closely with directors, designers, artists, staff, and volunteers.
The ideal candidate is a creative problem-solver with strong technical theatre experience, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to balance artistic vision with practical execution.
Key Responsibilities
Production Management
- Coordinate technical planning and execution for theatrical productions, concerts, rentals, and special events.
- Develop production schedules, build calendars, and technical rehearsal timelines.
- Serve as the primary liaison between directors, designers, and production personnel.
- Evaluate technical requirements and ensure productions are delivered safely, efficiently, and on budget.
Scenic Construction & Stage Operations
- Oversee the construction, installation, operation, and strike of scenery and stage elements.
- Manage scenic construction budgets and material purchases.
- Supervise production crews, contractors, volunteers, and interns.
- Maintain workshop spaces, tools, stage equipment, and backstage areas.
- Collaborate with contracted lighting and sound designers to implement production designs.
- Oversee lighting and sound system setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Coordinate equipment rentals and technical vendor relationships.
- Review lighting plots, sound requirements, and production specifications.
Budgeting & Resource Management
- Develop and manage production budgets for individual productions and events.
- Monitor expenses and maintain accurate records of production expenditures.
- Source materials, equipment, and services while maximizing budget efficiency.
- Assist with long-term planning for equipment upgrades and capital improvements.
- Recruit, train, and supervise production staff, technicians, and volunteers.
- Foster a safe, collaborative, and positive working environment.
- Provide technical training and mentorship opportunities for community participants.
Qualifications
- Experience in technical theatre, stagecraft, production management, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of scenic construction, theatrical lighting, sound systems, and stage operations.
- Experience managing budgets, schedules, and multiple production priorities.
- Ability to read technical drawings, construction plans, and lighting plots.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by production schedules.
- Experience working with volunteers and community-based arts organizations is preferred.
