Interpreter PD

Responsibilities

Provides both oral and written foreign language interpretation services to non‑English speaking patients and employees, including Sign Language for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients.

Interprets medical providers and staff questions, responses and/or instructions to patients, including technical terms, both in person and by telephone.

Interviews patients to complete required forms.

Schedules and directs patients to appointments by telephone instructions or by physical escort when medically necessary.

Assists hospital personnel by explaining the Rhode Island Hospital billing system, Community Free Service, HMO and third‑party procedures, and by helping patients complete paperwork.

Interprets cultural beliefs of non‑English speaking patients and interprets for employees and supervisors in all appropriate hospital areas.

Communicates with outside institutions and agencies on behalf of patients and staff; provides medical information to overseas doctors and hospitals when required.

Provides training to hospital personnel on cultural issues and ethnicity, facilitates communication in different languages, and allays patient anxiety.

Translates medical documents or information for staff, patients, and families accurately and precisely (e.g., medication instructions, brief letters).

Records and maintains documentation logs, records, and statistical data.

Maintains quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control in accordance with department policies and procedures.

Performs other related duties as required (e.g., answering telephone, inputting data into computer).

Minimum Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

Associate Degree in a science or human services related field, or equivalent experience.

Fluency and proficiency in both English and the target foreign language.

Ability to accurately interpret and translate verbal and written material.

Medical Interpreter Training Program Certificate.

Proficiency in medical terminology in English and in the foreign language.

Interpersonal and communication skills to deal effectively with medical providers and families in emotionally challenging situations.

Ability to interview, assess, and train student interpreters; act as a liaison for RIH for educational purposes in schools and community agencies.

Support for student interpreters.

Knowledge, sensitivity, and ability to bridge ethnic values, cultural beliefs, and behaviors with American medical practices.

Responsibility to ensure language barriers do not prevent the provision of quality medical care.

Sign Language interpreters require Certification and/or license.

Experience
Minimum of one to two years of formal Medical Interpreting.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Works in a normal office environment with significant exposure to patient care environments.

Pay Range
$28.25 - $28.25 per hour.

Rhode Island Hospital – 593 Eddy Street, Providence, Rhode Island 02903.
