Senior Director of Exhibitions and Collections
The Senior Director of Exhibitions and Collections is responsible for the administration, coordination, and successful implementation of all operational aspects of MOCA’s exhibition program. This position provides managerial oversight for the museum’s exhibitions, directs the day-to-day activities, and establishes protocol and workflow for the Exhibition Management, Registration, and Production departments.

The Senior Director provides strategic vision and ensures that all operational aspects of the exhibition program are in alignment with the overall objectives. The Senior Director works closely with department heads to help them understand the financial and/or operational implications of the museum’s programming decisions. The position works closely with the Chief Curator to develop strategy, advance short‑ and long‑term museum goals as it relates to the exhibition program, and meets with other members of the Senior Management team to keep them informed. In conjunction with Curatorial, Registration and Exhibition Production directorates, the Senior Director oversees all exhibition project and department general operating budgets, tour expenses, and reconciliation.

Essential Functions

Supervise Associate Director of Exhibition Management, Director of Production and Director of Registration & Collections, and work with all curatorial staff to determine timelines and related needs.

Provide ongoing day‑to‑day direction, supervision and guidance to assigned administrative teams in their operations, policies, and procedures. Evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution. In conjunction with Department Heads, develop, monitor and oversee related budgets.

Work closely with Exhibitions Management, Registration, Production and Curatorial Departments to ensure coordinated, timely and cost‑effective exhibition program.

Evaluate processes and activity performance to maintain competency, encourage best practices, and implement new strategies.

Oversee all aspects of multi‑year exhibitions including planning, exhibition and touring.

Primary liaison to Deputy Director regarding all aspects of program management.

Partner with the Chief Curator to manage and coordinate the exhibition program that advances the Museum’s visibility and reputation and includes exhibitions that travel nationally and internationally to ensure the Director’s strategic vision is realized. Works closely with the Director for exhibition management areas.

Supervise Director of Registration and Collections in the care and stewardship of MOCA’s permanent collection.

Oversee MOCA’s current and advance exhibition calendar and tour schedule. Insure timely dissemination of exhibition schedules and related information.

Draft and manage timelines for individual exhibitions that provide deadlines for budgets, checklists, loan requests, fundraising proposals, installation, printed matter and other requirements.

Attend exhibition production meetings and ensure budget and timing stay on track.

Finalize exhibition and co‑organization agreements in consultation with organizing curator(s), registrar, exhibitions staff and co‑organizing museums.

Supervise and advise on all contract negotiations with guest curators, artists and other individual contractors.

Work with key MOCA staff to schedule and negotiate incoming exhibition contracts, fees and tour costs with the organizing institution.

Oversee all exhibition organization and exhibition tour budgets, work with Exhibition Management, organizing Curators, Finance, Registration and Production departments to determine exhibition budgets for upcoming fiscal years, regularly communicate with museum staff to monitor exhibition expense activity throughout the year.

Review ledger reports for exhibitions as well as Exhibition Management, Production and Registration departments and make corrections as necessary. Maintain year‑to‑date budget forms that include actual expenditures and provide budget projections on a monthly basis. In consultation with Associate Director of Exhibition Management perform budget reconciliation of all exhibition budgets at the end of the fiscal year.

Requirements

Bachelor’s in art history or equivalent preferred, with extensive knowledge and emphasis in contemporary art.

Minimum of five years of relevant work experience, and minimum of three years of experience leading and managing museum projects, programs, and mentoring others.

Advanced knowledge of, and experience in, museum exhibition and collection development.

Strong staff management and mentoring skills.

Audio/Visual Technician
The Audio/Visual Technician works under the supervision of the AV Technical Manager to provide assistance for MOCA rental events, exhibitions, film and video presentations, performances, lectures and presentations and various other programs at both MOCA locations (MOCA Grand & MOCA at the Geffen Contemporary). Primary responsibilities include preparing, installing, activating, operating, troubleshooting, and breaking down audio‑visual and other equipment in a variety of contexts as well as the upkeep and maintenance of equipment in the museum’s inventory, collection, and as installed in exhibitions.

Hourly Rate:

$23.79 per hour

Essential Functions

Responsible for handling, installing, and troubleshooting complex artworks, assisting with projection, audio engineering (including live sound), videotaping, and lighting.

Works with AV Technical Manager and Exhibition Technicians in preparing and installing all AV equipment for exhibitions and with other MOCA staff for programming and events.

Maintains operations of exhibitions including monitoring all media elements, performing routine maintenance with supervision of AV Technical Manager.

Assisting in the preparation of exhibitions, including the handling of artworks, light construction and routine maintenance.

Assists with care, maintenance and tracking of the museum’s A/V equipment.

In coordination with the AV Technical Manager, provides audio‑visual services for live events, including setup and operation of media for museum’s programming, rentals and other functions.

Must be able to work well as a team member in a professional manner with a wide variety of staff and non‑museum personnel in accomplishing projects with high production standards.

Must be able to work in a precise and careful manner under stringent deadlines.

Must display creativity in solving technical problems, and flexibility in adapting to unusual circumstances.

Must be willing to understand and learn new technologies specific to MOCA installs and events.

Partnering with the Rentals Program Manager, Registration Department, Curatorial Department, Exhibitions Department, Education Department, and visiting artists and curators working on museum projects.

And other duties as required.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Film/Video, Theater, Audio Production, Media Arts, Performing Arts or a closely related field strongly preferred. Experience may count towards a degree.

Minimum experience of two years working with film, video, audio, new media or related production work.

Computer competency required.

Basic electrical knowledge required, advanced electrical knowledge preferred.

Working knowledge of tools and proper application required.

Must demonstrate safe use of equipment including, but not limited to: media equipment, electrical equipment, personnel lifts, and various portable and stationary power tools.

Must be ok presenting both conventional and nonconventional art forms that can be experimental in nature.

Must be willing to follow Injury Illness Prevention Program.

Ability to follow a number of systems for identifying, evaluating, and preventing occupational safety and health hazards, in addition to initiating Employee Safe Training with all stationary and mobile power tools and in the handling of all relevant materials and substances.

Gallery Attendant I
Overview
The Gallery Attendant I (GA I) position creates a warm, welcoming, accessible, and enjoyable experience in the museum’s galleries by engaging visitors in viewing and discussing works of art while also focusing on protecting the artworks. Scheduled at either of MOCA’s downtown locations—MOCA Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles and The Geffen Contemporary in Little Tokyo—GA I staff the museum, queuing, and entry points during public hours, special events, and public programs; in addition, they handle ticketing admissions as well as membership sales and service. GA I help ensure visitor and staff compliance with the museum’s code of conduct. On an as‑needed basis, they may be assigned MOCA staff office reception desk coverage which requires ability to execute emergency fire panel procedures.

Hourly Rate:

$18.97 per hour

Requirements

Friendly and outgoing disposition; strong communication skills to interact with diverse visitors; understanding of how body language can convey a welcoming yet professional presence.

Experience dealing with the public in a customer service or hospitality capacity. Hospitality‑oriented individuals with strong people skills are preferred.

Familiarity with museums; strong interest in contemporary art.

Ability to handle fast‑paced events, as well as to remain focused and attentive during quieter times.

Exercise and demonstrate good judgment consistently.

In partnership with security personnel, willingness to act as a “first responder” in emergency situations such as earthquakes, power outages, or incidents requiring medical attention.

Three days per week minimum availability. Flexible schedule; ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, at any MOCA location as assigned. Must have weekend availability which is defined as Saturday and/or Sunday.

Essential Functions

Greet, orient, and engage visitors in experiencing art, while protecting artworks on view. All GAs will adhere to museum rules and policies including those set forth in the Visitor Code of Conduct.

Run check‑in and staffing for special events and public programs, including organizing and communicating with people in line.

Maintain posts in the museum lobby and galleries during public hours and special events.

Assist MOCA Security in handling fire/life safety protocols, including medical incidents or emergency situations.

Participate in daily briefings and additional scheduled trainings, including curatorial walkthroughs of new exhibitions. When physical attendance is not possible, watch videos of trainings and walkthroughs.

Assist Leads in setting up and striking wayfinding devices, ticketing signage, and visitor engagement collateral.

Use Altru and XTruLink ticketing and scanning systems to capture accurate visitor information and process transactions in both free and paid admission contexts.

Be knowledgeable about MOCA membership benefits and how to join; suggest memberships to visitors.

Stay up‑to‑date on museum information by reviewing written all‑staff communications and attending all staff meetings.

Stay up‑to‑date on policies and procedures as outlined in training sessions, staff meetings, as well as written handbooks and the VE Google Site.

Assist patrons with accessibility aids; use the two questions outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act, to ensure proper access for prospective ticket‑purchasers with service animals.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Upon satisfactory completion of a 90‑day probationary period:

Complete training to act as a Contemporary Art Start ambassador; assist MOCA educators, teachers, and students in implementing on‑site tours.

Complete training to perform the duties of the MOCA relief receptionist as needed. Reception desk duties include:

Covering MOCA staff offices reception desk during absences or breaks of the regular receptionist, including events outside of public hours, providing information regarding museum services and programs to in‑person visitors and telephone callers in a professional and courteous manner.

Assisting with systems and records of access control and parcel control.

Providing parking validations and record recipients.

Executing fire panel emergency procedures when alarms occur.
