Taylor Studios is an exhibit design and fabrication firm producing exhibits and experiences within museums, nature centers, libraries, visitor centers, universities, and all sorts of other facilities across the country. We believe great design has the power to educate, inspire, and connect people through compelling stories and meaningful experiences.
We are seeking an experienced, full-time Art Director
to join our creative, artistic, and fun group of hard‑working designers. Ideal candidate portfolios will demonstrate coherence between content/story and design, flexibility to work in a variety of styles for different audiences, the ability to lead a project from concept through completion, and overall general creativity.
Art Directors at Taylor Studios collaborate closely with Exhibit Designers, Graphic Designers, Interpretive Planners, Construction Detailers, Project Managers, and Production Supervisors. They are responsible for ensuring coherent design in line with client expectations and Taylor standards, and for planning and supervising the creative aspects of individual projects. They serve as the point person for other departments regarding creative aspects of specific projects.
Duties include:
Planning design workshop presentations with clients
Internal concept brainstorming
Contributing to design processes, standards, and templates
Assisting design teams in the creation and maintenance of work plans for individual project phases
Running weekly project check‑in meetings
Planning deliverable content and reviewing deliverables to ensure client needs and Taylor standards are met
Collaboration with the Director of Design and other Art Directors in general creative direction and creative guidance to designers
Maintaining the project budget with Project Managers, and working with Estimating to ensure exhibits can be completed within budget and on time
Most Taylor Studios projects begin with an on‑site meeting with clients, and so travel is required 2-5 weeks each year.
Preferred skills:
Advanced skill in exhibit design, graphic design, or interpretation.
Proficiency in Vectorworks, knowledge of comparable programs such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, etc.
Ability to read construction documents
Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, especially Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop
Comfort with Microsoft Excel
Basic understanding of standard construction materials and methods
Traditional drawing skills, proficiency in digital drawing with programs such as Procreate
Comfort with public speaking, leading, and working collaboratively
Excellent management, communication, and leadership skills
General curiosity about varied topics and love of learning
The ideal candidate will have 5‑10+ years of experience in a similar role at another design firm or as in‑house creative leadership for an individual institution.
Taylor Studios hires candidates who demonstrate effective time management, thoughtful acceptance of constructive criticism, persistence, curiosity, active learning, and big‑picture conceptual thinking with a keen eye for detail and organization.
This is a full‑time, salaried position with benefits including a 401(k), health insurance, and many opportunities for creative cross‑training. This is not a remote position but does have a flexible schedule that only requires on‑site work three days per week. Pay is commensurate with experience and auxiliary skills.
