Job Description
The Steward is responsible for cleaning and storing all flatware, silver, glass, kitchen trays, pots, pans according to the direction of the restaurant management team. The Steward also assists in food preparation as requested. This position reports to the Executive Steward.
Essential Job Functions / Key Job Responsibilities
Clean and stack all dishes properly.
Store dishes and silver in the designated locations.
Set up cleaning area: assemble dish machine, fill water tanks, and turn on heating elements.
Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment, including pre‑ and post‑shift cleaning of kitchen equipment, walk‑in fridge/freezer storage, dry storage, trash, recycling, mopping, and sweeping.
Assist with storage of food deliveries.
Clean kitchen walls, floors, loading docks, and other associated areas at the proper time.
Disassemble, clean, and re‑assemble dishwasher prior to the end of shift.
Post appropriate caution signs when the floor is wet or being mopped to ensure the highest level of safety.
Maintain kitchen work areas, equipment, and utensils in a clean, orderly condition.
Assist with preparing food items according to chef specifications.
Follow the daily preparation list to ensure items are ready for service.
Report any problems with food product, kitchen equipment or work area to the Executive Steward.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent (preferred).
Prior work experience in a commercial kitchen (preferred).
ServSafe or similar food safety course certification (preferred).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong knowledge of company policies and procedures.
Familiarity with company rules, regulations, and operational standards.
Basic industry terminology.
Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
Ability to perform basic problem‑solving.
Ability to identify straightforward issues and propose simple solutions.
Ability to follow oral or written directions in basic English.
Ability to work collaboratively to achieve team goals.
Ability to quickly adapt to changes in processes, customer flow, environments, and tasks with great attention to detail.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
Additional Information
Work Environment & Physical Demands
Ability to stand, walk, or remain on your feet for extended periods; kneeling and bending may be required.
Regular indoor work under normal conditions.
Must be able to occasionally lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds individually or with assistance.
