Technical Theatre Assistant
Student technicians construct, paint, install, and operate all theatrical scenic, property, lighting, and audio/visual elements for the Theatre Department’s productions at the Mullen Performing Arts Center. Technicians may also support department functions such as class and graduate thesis projects, faculty workshops, and visiting productions associated with Villanova Theatre and the Mullen Performing Arts Center.

Responsibilities

Operate a variety of stationary and hand‑held woodworking tools (table saw, miter saw, routers, sanders, impact drivers, drill drivers, pneumatic tools, hand tools, tape measures, layout tools, etc.) for custom stage scenery fabrication.

Mix and apply scenic paint treatments, finishes, and decorative elements (water‑based latex paints, paint sealers, glues, faux finishes, wallpapers, etc.).

Fabricate, reutilize, and assemble custom stage hand props.

Assist with programming theatrical lighting and audio consoles, and operate consoles during technical rehearsals and evening performances.

Perform MIG welding and use other common arc welding and metalworking equipment.

Operate CNC machinery, cutting bits, and equipment.

Work at height on elevated catwalks, ladders, and personal genie or scissor lifts (MEWP) while wearing required safety fall arrest harnesses and hard hats.

Hang, cable, patch, and focus theatrical lighting equipment.

Read and interpret construction shop drawings and take written and verbal instructions from supervisors or graduate student assistants.

Perform routine maintenance of shop space and equipment, including loading and unloading materials.

Requirements

Comfortable lifting and carrying up to 40 lbs and climbing ladders.

Comfortable using or learning a wide variety of woodworking, metalworking, painting, and construction‑oriented power and hand tools.

Basic understanding of geometry and math skills.

Ability to receive verbal and/or written instructions, including shop construction drawings and paint elevations.

Ability to work well in a group setting, be open to new experiences, and eager to learn new skills.

Preference for applicants with a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and no traffic violations.

No prior experience required; training is provided.

Physical Demands

Work is physically demanding; technicians remain on their feet for most work calls.

Regular exposure to building materials such as wood, foam, plastics, steel, glue, and latex paints.

Work occurs in dusty and/or noisy environments with power tools running; hands and clothing may become dirty or splattered.

Personal protection equipment (safety glasses, earplugs, dust masks) is required and provided.

Must be comfortable lifting up to 40 lbs, climbing ladders and scaffolds, and using a wide variety of woodworking and construction power tools and hand tools.

Wage Rate: $11.25 per hour
