St. John Neumann Parish in Homewood, IL is seeking a part-time, skilled and spiritually committed Choir Director to lead and develop our parish music ministry. The Choir Director will oversee the musical preparation and performance for liturgical celebrations, fostering an environment of prayerful music ministry that enhances the worship experience. A strong understanding of Catholic liturgy, sacred music traditions, and choral leadership is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Plan, rehearse, and direct the parish choir for weekend Masses, holy days, and special liturgical celebrations.

Collaborate with the Pastor, Assistant Music Director and other liturgical ministers to select appropriate music that aligns with the liturgical season and readings.

Teach and inspire choir members of diverse skill levels, nurturing both musical and spiritual growth.

Coordinate and schedule choir rehearsals, ensuring adequate preparation for all liturgical events.

Recruit and mentor new choir members and cantors.

Maintain and organize the choir library, ensuring access to music scores, recordings, and necessary resources.

Incorporate traditional Catholic hymns, chant, and contemporary sacred music as appropriate.

Support parish music programs, including special events.

Multicultural Ministry

Support and celebrate the cultural diversity of the parish through appropriate liturgical music traditions.

Promote inclusion and representation in the music ministry while maintaining the unity of liturgy.

Preferred

Proficiency in piano, organ, or another accompanying instrument.

Experience in multicultural or multilingual ministry settings.

Familiarity with a broad range of Catholic sacred music styles, including traditional, contemporary, and a culturally diverse repertoire.

Formal training in music, choral conducting, liturgy, or a related field.

Qualifications

Proficient in choral conducting, vocal technique, and music theory.

Familiarity with Catholic liturgy, liturgical seasons, and sacramental celebrations.

Experience with sacred music, including chant, hymns, and contemporary multicultural liturgical music.

Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and lead volunteers.

Ability to play piano or organ is preferred but not necessary.

Previous experience preferred.
