Job Summary: The Music Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing music for the liturgies of St. Joseph Parish, including Saturday and Sunday Masses and feasts. Music selection should encourage congregational singing, follow USCCB guidelines in "Sing to the Lord," and align with Bishop and Pastor directives. The position reports to the Pastor and Director of Operations, operating under general supervision with wide latitude for independent judgment.
Ministerial Character
Lead the efforts to foster musical worship in support of the Liturgy, demonstrate strong leadership, support pastoral concerns, and uphold rubrics from Vatican and USCCB, including Sing to the Lord and the Roman Missal.
Essential Job Duties
- Rehearse choirs and ensembles for services.
- Prepare St. Joseph choirs (11 AM sung Mass; 5:30 Praise and Worship).
- Direct seasonal ensembles: Holy Week choir, Christmas Midnight Mass choir, Christmas Eve Children’s Mass.
- Conduct instrumental ensembles during Regular Masses and major feasts.
- Participate in the Liturgy team to design liturgy in accordance with Catholic norms and respond to St. Joseph’s needs.
- Gather feedback on music effectiveness and adjust plans accordingly.
- Lead and grow the music ministry community; recruit new members.
- Supervise pianists and other instrumentalists for services.
- Plan and coordinate music for extra services as needed.
- Plan and approve music for weddings per policy; inform wedding coordinator and clergy promptly.
- Lead music for funerals, coordinating all details.
- Support music needs of other departments within the parish and school.
- Supervise audio equipment on campus, including operation, upgrades, and maintenance.
- Manage budget, keep records, and follow guidelines.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of Catholic music rubrics and history.
- Advanced knowledge of choral music.
- Ability to conduct and rehearse choirs.
- Knowledge of music theory and composition.
- Knowledge of Catholic teachings and documents (NABRE, Catechism, Code of Canon Law, Papal Encyclicals).
- Skill in verbal and non‑verbal communication.
- Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and database programs.
- Proficiency in music notation software.
- Ability to work effectively with staff, clergy, religious, and laity.
- Excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
- Strong organization, prioritization, and time‑management skills.
- Respectful and attentive to instructions.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or GED acceptable, Bachelor’s degree from an accredited American university or equivalent abroad.
Experience
- Two (2) years of related full‑time wage earning experience.
Language
- English – proficient in conversing, reading, and writing.
- Spanish – proficient in conversing, reading, and writing (preferred but not required).
Catholic Requirement
Must be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid Texas driver’s license.
- Compliance with Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies.
