Job Overview
This position provides expertise in graphic arts and visual standards. The graphic designer works with staff and leaders to help shape the visual image of the hospital and sometimes the affiliates, designing major institutional marketing pieces and ensuring the high quality appearance of publications, advertisements, videos, and Internet communications.

Minimum Qualifications
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure

Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual arts, fine arts or related field.

Experience

Two years of experience with design, imaging, and other multi‑media programs.

Two years of experience with Adobe print and imaging software (e.g. InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for publications, advertisements and other printed pieces, digital billboards, signage, video, and photo acquisition. This position is an integral part of the Marketing and Communications team.

The graphic designer determines how multiple elements including text and art can best communicate the message of a particular piece.

The designer arranges selected elements to communicate the messages of WVU Medicine in a literate, well‑organized, and attractive manner. Audiences include the public, internal and external physicians, patients, and employees.

Placements of the designer’s work include 4‑color magazines with statewide circulation, newspapers, television, internal communications vehicles, and the Internet.

Offers advice to institutional leaders on signage and wayfinding issue due to designers expertise with type and legibility.

Produces and designs publications, advertisements, and other pieces that reflect and further the image of WVU Medicine.

Produces and designs products that meet the highest national standards.

Assist other departments in achieving and maintaining standards of excellence in design.

Must coordinate work of external service bureaus, photographers, and printers to ensure high quality products.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit for long periods of time.

Ability to lift, push or pull 10–15 pounds.

Working Environment

Exposed to high levels of stress and anxiety.

Experiences constant interruptions.

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of and skill using Macintosh and PC computers.

Skill in the acquisition and processing of digital images.

Knowledge of printing process and pre‑press technology.

Knowledge of web design and video editing programs.

Strong creative, oral, and written skills.
