Position Overview
Under the direction and supervision of the Regional Business Director, the Business Development Manager (BDM) will manage and grow the Mercury Marine Independent Boatbuilder network within her assigned OEM sales territory through strategic relationship development with current and prospective customers. In addition to regional OEM responsibilities, this role will lead Mercury Racing sales efforts across the United States. The successful BDM will coach, consult, develop, and grow sales volume, market share, and profitability across both OEM and Racing product lines.
Essential Functions
Develop and maintain strong working relationships with Mercury Marine independent boat builder partners within the assigned OEM territory while identifying and developing new OEM and Mercury Racing opportunities across the U.S.
Drive growth of OEM business within the assigned territory and Mercury Racing business nationally, ensuring alignment with overall sales, market share, and profitability objectives.
Lead development and execution of territory‑based OEM strategies and national Mercury Racing sales strategies, adapting to customer needs and market conditions.
Serve as the primary commercial lead for Mercury Racing sales across the United States, including pipeline development, customer engagement, and conversion of opportunities.
Develop and manage accurate sales forecasts for Mercury Racing business, including financial projections and customer demand planning.
Participate as a core member of the Mercury Racing program team, contributing to sales presentations, go‑to‑market strategies, and customer‑facing initiatives.
Grow Mercury Racing business across the U.S. by identifying expansion opportunities within existing accounts and developing new high‑performance market segments.
Coach, consult, and support OEM boatbuilder partners to drive long‑term growth, including identifying opportunities to introduce high‑performance and Racing product applications where applicable.
Develop and deliver compelling sales presentations, clearly communicating product value, features, and benefits tailored to both OEM and high‑performance/Racing customers.
Communicate customer requirements and collaborate cross‑functionally with engineering, service, marketing, supply chain, and other internal teams to achieve business objectives.
Work jointly with inside sales, service personnel, credit teams, and Racing program stakeholders to achieve territory and national sales goals.
Monitor performance through regular reporting, utilizing CRM, forecasting tools, and analytics to track progress and adjust strategy as needed.
Represent Mercury Marine at national, regional, and local boat shows, Racing events, dealer meetings, and customer open houses; weekend participation is common.
Travel frequently within the OEM territory and nationally as required to support Racing initiatives (minimum 50% overnight travel).
Demonstrate strong negotiation, communication, and relationship management skills while protecting Mercury’s commercial interests.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Business Management, Marketing, or equivalent.
Minimum 3+ years of related work experience within the Marine Industry, Recreational Industry, or in the areas of Sales, Business or Marketing.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to effectively communicate cross‑functionally.
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (including MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint) Internet/Intranet and CRM skills, particularly while tethered via laptop from a remote location.
Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to travel at least 50% overnight.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong data analysis and computer skills. Need the ability to understand and analyze data and trends. Metrics Driven.
A practical \"nose for business\" and strong problem solver, both strategically and tactically.
Possesses a sense of urgency and willingness to seek opportunity.
A high degree of credibility to be convincing and persuasive when faced with resistance.
Working Conditions
Overnight travel required. Occasional weekend events.
Location and Travel
Office location: Southeast and Gulf Coast Regions of the United States. Travel required: 50% overnight travel opportunities.
Compensation and Benefits
Pay range: $86,500 - $126,800 annually. Short‑term incentive program eligibility.
