Choir Director (High School/changed voices)

Company Description Founded in 2010, the Silicon Valley Boychoir, is a 501(c)3 non‑profit arts organization for boys (ages 7 and up) in Palo Alto, CA.

Mission statement To train boys in the choral art with an emphasis on music literacy and the highest artistic standards. Boys will learn life‑long skills and go forth into the world as skilled tenors and basses and leaders in their future choirs.

Role Description: The ideal candidate will be an experienced vocal/choral teacher who enjoys teaching and can model a healthy tenor and/or baritone sound.

Responsibilities include:

Direct one advanced choir (6-10 singers with changed voices), Tuesdays, 6-8 p.m.

Prep for rehearsals including creating lesson plans and selecting music in collaboration with other directors as needed.

Reinforce sight‑reading skills as part of the rehearsal.

Demonstrate vocal technique to young tenors and basses.

Communicate with parents and provide semester‑end evaluations.

Position includes up to two additional weekend rehearsals per semester, one dress rehearsal each semester, and two concerts (December and May).

Salaried position over 10 months averaging 3-4 hours a week in Palo Alto.

An accompanist will be provided for part of the rehearsal.

Indoor and outdoor space is available.

The site is located in a residential neighborhood with excellent parking.

The organization has very supportive parents.

Qualifications

Strong foundation in Music Theory and overall Music knowledge relevant to choral repertoire and changed voices.

Experience in Music Education, including teaching adolescents and leading choral ensembles.

Piano skills sufficient for vocal warm‑ups, rehearsal accompaniment, and basic score reading support.

Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Education, Choral Conducting, or a related field preferred.

Experience working with high‑school students and changed voices, with an understanding of vocal development.

Effective rehearsal planning and organizational skills.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with commitment to an inclusive, respectful learning environment.
