The Coastal Star is a monthly newspaper serving South Palm Beach County's coastal communities, from the town of South Palm Beach on the north end to the city of Boca Raton to the south. The publication offers in-depth local news and features, with a hyperlocal focus on issues that impact or are about barrier island residents and the communities adjacent to them.
Role Description

The newspaper is seeking a part-time Government/general assignment reporter based near its coverage area. The reporter will be responsible for attending government meetings in-person and online, as well as developing larger regional stories on topics affecting the ten South County municipalities in The Coastal Star's circulation area. The role involves cultivating sources, collaborating with editors on story angles, meeting deadlines, and having a keen ability to spot interesting stories worth developing within otherwise dull government meeting agendas.
Qualifications

Minimum three years of reporting or journalism experience, including significant experience covering municipal governments and local government meetings.
Strong understanding of local government and public sector operations.
Excellent reporting and communication skills, including clear writing, interviewing, and the ability to engage with diverse community members.
Ability to attend government meetings or other events in person in the South Palm Beach County area.
Strong organization and time management, and comfort working independently under deadline pressure.
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Political Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
