Freelance Reporter—Business of Media
Observer is looking for a regular freelance reporter to cover major social media and streaming companies. We’re seeking someone fascinated by not only the latest developments but also the executives, entrepreneurs and investors behind them.
This role is for an early- to mid-career business journalist looking to develop expertise in the media industry. The ideal candidate should have an insatiable curiosity and an expansive network of sources in the media industry. They should also have a good understanding of the broader worlds of business, corporate finance and the economy.
At its core, this beat covers how the most innovative minds in these emerging industries come up with ideas and make things happen. We’re looking for a reporter who can see the big picture but embraces the details and is entrepreneurial in finding and pitching stories.
Requirements
At least two years of experience in business journalism and a track record for writing for reputable news outlets.
Facility for writing both breaking news and longer enterprise stories.
Eagerness to find and pitch story ideas regularly.
High journalistic standards, attention to detail, and a skeptical heart of a fact-checker.
The ability to attend and cover industry events.
Comfort with data and experience building their own charts.
Our standard rate is $250 to $400 per article for 600-800 words. Higher rates are negotiable for exclusives and features. This position is limited to U.S.-based applicants.
To apply, please send your resume to business@observer.com with “Your Full Name + Freelance Reporter—Business of Media” in the subject line, and include three to five writing samples or a link to a personal website/portfolio.
