Join the Hampton Sheriff’s Office in a dynamic role focused on connecting the agency with the community. This position leads community events and programs, serves as the agency’s Public Information Officer, and helps ensure clear, professional communication with the public, media, and internal staff. Working under the supervision of the Director of Court and Support Services, this role is ideal for someone who is organized, personable, and skilled at building positive relationships while upholding all applicable laws, regulations, and department policies.
Typical Tasks
Serve as the official spokesperson to the media and the public
Create and distribute press releases, reports, and informational materials
Coordinate community events, school visits, and public presentations
Manage citizen engagement programs and advisory boards
Capture and maintain media (photos, presentations, communications content)
Represent the Sheriff’s Office at community and official events
Handle sensitive information with professionalism and discretion
Support special projects and internal training initiatives
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree (4-year) from an accredited college or university with major coursework in English, journalism, public speaking, communications, or a related field.
A minimum of three (3) years of experience and proficiency with computer applications, including graphic layout, design software, and related digital tools.
Must successfully pass a background check before any offer of employment or promotion.
This position is safety sensitive and subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances per City policy.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record per City criteria.
Additinaotl Requimrnts
Pursuant to Virginia Code §53.1-29 and DCJS/Hampton Sheriff policy, must qualify to carry and use firearms.
Appointment is at-will under Virginia Code §15.2-1603 and serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff.
Required to participate in annual physical and physical agility tests.
The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during city emergencies, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
