Job Summary The Senior Manager of Communications executes the day-to-day operations of the firm’s communications program and takes a leading role developing and implementing the global public relations strategies and initiatives – with an eye towards raising the firm’s profile among key audiences and managing its public reputation. This position serves as a communications liaison to firmwide practice and industry group leaders, partners, and other departmental managers. The Senior Manager advances the firm’s internal and external public relations objectives, including media outreach, internal communications, article placements, legal industry awards, social media promotion, and other efforts that protect and enhance the firm’s reputation, and develops processes for measuring the effectiveness of those efforts. The Senior Manager of Communications will create a comprehensive social media plan and oversee efforts to disseminate our messages in the marketplace.
Job Responsibilities Works with the Director of Communications to manage day-to-day operations of communications program and ensure an integrated approach and strategy for internal and external audiences.
Supports the firm’s awards and rankings strategy by advancing the firm, its practices, its attorneys, and other strategic initiatives through appropriate rankings, surveys, and lists. Oversees the project management of the firm’s survey response process to ensure consistency, coordination of work effort (such as with other departments), submission deadlines, and timely approvals.
Develops media plans that include outreach materials, media pitches, talking points/Q&As, recognition submissions, internal communications, and press releases for the firm, including practice leaders and representatives of management.
In collaboration with Marketing and Communications team members, takes the leading role in overseeing the development of creative and compelling content and thought leadership across the firm’s social media channels. This includes evaluating other social media platforms and developing a program where the PR team responds in real time to developing stories.
Leads lateral on-boarding campaigns under supervision of the Director and manages external agency support of campaign components. Campaigns include: consulting with practice group leaders on messaging approach; creating the related press release and other related external and internal communications and obtaining approval from practice/firm leadership; prepping laterals for media interviews; creating media contact lists; and coordinating media interviews.
Pro-actively pitches reporters to raise the visibility of the firm in the marketplace and oversees all media pitches.
Manages day-to-day reporter inquiries from key legal, industry, trade, and general media outlets by screening requests, ensuring lack of conflicts, identifying appropriate attorney for response, routing information to proper practice group and leadership contacts, scheduling interviews, conducting reporter follow-up as needed, routing resulting placement, coordinating reprint, and posting placement to appropriate sections of the firm’s website.
Assists on crisis communications and other sensitive firm and client matters when appropriate.
Develops and maintains key relationships with targeted online, print, and broadcast media.
Manages proactive media pitching efforts for strategic firm efforts, practice area campaigns, new partner hires, and other projects including the development and execution of the complete media relations process.
Manages requests to place byline articles in select publications, which includes identifying proper media targets and conducting media outreach accordingly.
Oversees the tracking of key analytics to measure the effectiveness of the firm’s communications and marketing efforts.
Maintains an active knowledge of industry trends and institutional knowledge to better aid the department’s efforts.
Manages the firm’s external PR agencies and other outside vendors/consultants under the supervision of the director.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing with internal and external contacts.
Demonstrated ability to make presentations to small and/or large groups in an effective manner.
Demonstrated advanced skill in MS suite to produce quality written communications such as memos, spreadsheets, slides and standard work documents. Familiarity with content management systems to post web and social media content is desired.
Must possess the interpersonal skills necessary to communicate and follow instructions effectively from a diverse group of clients, attorneys, and staff.
Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing priorities and maintain a productive and committed work effort, meeting deadlines and successfully managing workload.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and with others in a cooperative manner to accomplish position functions and participate in team efforts.
Demonstrated ability to develop strong relationships with media contacts for profile-building efforts: attracting media coverage of firm, practices, and lawyers, and placing lawyer articles in professional publications
Demonstrated ability to provide quality client service to both internal and external contacts, regarding both routine and complex matters. Requires patience, creativity and discretion.
Vendor management experience (PR agencies and monitoring services) is desired.
Demonstrated ability as an editor; understanding of AP Style or another style guide is desired.
Ability to devise analytics standards for tracking and analyzing the effectiveness of communications efforts.
Understanding of media monitoring and research tools, digital PR services, and best practices for PR-related analytics and social media promotion is desired.
Understanding of internal communications is preferred, including executive communications.
Experience in law firm media relations/marketing environment, PR agency or other professional services firm environment is strongly desired.
Significant experience, working knowledge of and established contacts with online, print, and broadcast media highly desired.
Education The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, English, Marketing, or Journalism. Equivalent combination of training and experience may substitute.
Experience The position requires a minimum of eight (8) years of increasingly responsible, directly related experience during which knowledge, skills and abilities applicable to the position were demonstrated.
Pay Range $132,000 - $173,000 Chicago
$139,000 - $182,000 DC
$146,000 - $191,000 NYC

The salary for this position may vary based on location, market data, an applicant’s skills and prior experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other factors.
