Sports Information Specialist
Position Title: Sports Information Specialist

Department: Athletics

Primary Location: Palomar College (San Marcos, Escondido, Rancho Bernardo, Fallbrook). Training may occur at any campus location.

Primary Function

Publicizes and promotes Palomar College athletic teams and student athletes; develops and distributes media guides, team programs, press releases and other materials; updates and compiles information for results, statistics and historical records; creates, lays out and maintains content on the Athletics website and social media platforms; attends home and designated away events; represents the District as a voting member of athletic associations.

Minimum Qualifications

Five years of experience working for an athletic department, media outlet, public relations or marketing organization.

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Training in scorekeeping and statistical input for various sports may be required.

Transcripts must be included to receive credit for education and/or substitute experience. Only coursework completed at accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with and/or a demonstrated knowledge of a wide variety of college‑ or professional‑level team sports.

Coursework beyond the minimum in journalism, communications, English or a closely related field.

Experience with graphic creation for social media and/or scoreboards.

Experience with live stream and broadcast production.

License and Certificates
Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver’s license by time of appointment.

Employment Terms
Full or Part Time: Part‑time (18 hours per week, 12 months per year).

Category: Classified. Grade: 26. Salary: $2,579.90 – $3,133.53 per month, step placement negotiable. 3% differential pay for hours between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm.

Hours and Work Schedule
Hours per week: 18. Work Schedule varies by team. General schedule: Monday–Thursday, 10:00 am–2:30 pm. Occasional night and weekend hours may be required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Develop & distribute press releases, game stories, feature stories, athlete and coaching biographies; design, edit, lay out and coordinate production in hard copy & electronic media guides/programs.

Conduct media relations activities; provide media outlets with sports results, stories, background information, statistics, records, photos, proactively and as requested.

Keep, compile, input and transmit statistics for games and seasons; keep official score at home games for basketball, baseball, softball, other sports; manage press box for football games.

Assist in meeting compliance standards of governing authorities (CCCAA, PCAC, SCFA, SCWA); may represent District as voting member at conference meetings.

Coordinate assignments of sports photographers; compile photos of student athletes and coaches; maintain sports photography portfolios.

Update Athletics website and social media platforms with press releases, game stories, feature stories, scores, photos and statistics.

Serve as Palomar College Athletic Hall of Fame historian: develop nominee list, data for selection committee, oversee induction ceremony, liaise with inductees.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of marketing, public relations, public affairs, media relations principles and practices.

Knowledge of Associated Press journalism standards and publication techniques.

Advanced communication skills with correct English usage.

Knowledge of sports rules, NCAA scorekeeping and statistical guidelines.

Knowledge of statistical compilation for various sports.

Knowledge of digital camera use, lighting and photography quality.

Skill in research methods, data analysis.

Knowledge of California Public Records Request Act.

Knowledge of NCAA and other athletic association regulations.

Skill in standard web applications for assigned responsibilities.

Proficiency with computers and software programs.

Skill Set

Marketing, promotion, and media interest generation in sports.

Using AP and journalism standards to draft press releases and articles.

Designing and coordinating publication of media guides, game programs, brochures, flyers.

Maintaining and interpreting detailed statistics and records.

Representing organization to officials, coaches, administrators, athletes.

Developing and maintaining contacts with sports media personnel.

Operating standard office equipment and web publishing tools.

Organizing and maintaining specialized files.

Maintaining confidentiality of student files.

Sensitivity and understanding of diverse student, faculty, staff backgrounds.

Exercising tact and diplomacy with sensitive issues.

Building effective working relationships.

Working Conditions

Typical office conditions (quiet to moderate noise), with occasional loud sports events.

Required to work evenings, weekends, and travel to District and other locations.

Physical functions include sitting, standing, walking, repetitive hand use, and reaching.

Terms of Employment
Pre‑employment requirements: live scan/fingerprinting, transcripts, TB risk assessment. Six‑month probationary period.
