Student Play-by-Play Announcer
The Student Play-by-Play Announcer provides play-by-play announcing of Long Beach State Athletics games on the 22 West Radio internet stream and FM broadcasts for live sports student broadcasts. Monitors the broadcast in accordance with rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Call play-by-play action of Long Beach State student sports broadcasts.
2. Coordinate with the Sports Broadcasting Assistant and the Station Program Assistant for all necessary programming, sponsor mentions, and pre- and post-game additions to the sports play-by-play broadcast.
3. Interpret readings and indicators on the control console and determines operating adjustments required to obtain uniform audio sound level.
4. Maintains proper paper logging of station identification and non-commercial underwriting messages in accordance with rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
5. Communicates any discrepancies with programming, underwriting, and engineering (for equipment) to the proper departments. Will handle all communication in writing with the date/time of the incident(s) included.
6. Appears on a weekly 1-hour sports commentary program hosted by the Sports Broadcasting Assistant or their designee.
7. Attends live sports broadcast staff meetings.
8. Aid in sports department needs as they pertain to the broadcast of live or recorded sports presentations.
9. Attends biweekly staff meetings and submits a written weekly report following guidelines from the Student General Manager.
10. Other duties as assigned, reasonably within the scope of the job.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
One year of college; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in sports broadcasting and play-by-play announcing. One year of sports broadcasting experience preferred. Previous volunteer experience with 22 West Media preferred. Must be a current and active CSULB student enrolled in a minimum of 6 units.
Knowledge and Abilities
To perform this position successfully, an individual should have strong knowledge of baseball, softball, water polo, and/or soccer, with the ability to research, track, interpret, and report game statistics in real time and provide live play-by-play or color commentary. Must be able to read and interpret written instructions and procedures, prepare routine reports, communicate effectively with diverse audiences, perform basic mathematical calculations, and apply sound judgment to follow instructions and resolve routine operational issues. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and Adobe Creative programs is preferred.
Individual must acquire proficiency in Station Playlist Pro and Adobe Audition software through participation in mandatory training and also complete training on FCC broadcast regulations regarding noncommercial radio.

Schedule
This position is a temporary, one academic-year appointment aligned with the CSULB academic calendar. The work schedule generally follows standard business hours, with flexibility required during peak periods. Occasional evening and weekend support is required.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit at a desk or computer workstation and use hands and fingers to key data, sort documents, and file paperwork. The employee is frequently required to stand and be able to talk or hear in interactions with others. The employee is occasionally required to walk to other offices within the building and around the campus. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
