Responsibilities

Lead projects and provide advanced technical skills needed to design, develop, modify, test and maintain code in software systems that make up the campus web services, including database and digital media integration, user experience design, and accessibility.

Act as a project leader for projects of moderate complexity, managing day‑to‑day operational aspects of project requirements and scope.

Code, test, debug and implement or modify complex web applications with focus on performance, security, accessibility and ease of use by utilizing enterprise development frameworks, tools and methodologies, and advise other Web Software Engineers on complex tasks.

Provide advanced support and technical advice related to the resolution of issues that arise in software developed.

Interact with customers to document complex business requirements, translate them to technical specifications, conduct business process analysis and create conceptual designs while fitting into the overall context of existing IT systems and processes.

Mentor other web engineers and developers; collaborate with project team members to design systems, prioritize needs, communicate requirements, develop content criteria, choose solutions, and provide timelines and estimates for project completion.

Research new tools, technologies and development platforms for use in supporting critical business processes.

Ensure the preparation and maintenance of technical and support documentation, document procedures, create reports and provide training for users.

Coordinate and communicate with applicable departments within the University to effectively troubleshoot or provide customer support to the campus on website and web application related issues utilizing the established IT service management framework.

Debug software by studying information needs, conferring with users, studying systems flow, data usage and work processes, investigating problem areas, and following the software development lifecycle.

Provide technical analysis, design, development, conversion and implementation work by maintaining the existing codebase, which includes expert analysis to troubleshoot bugs, provide resolutions to complex issues and add new features.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education : Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology or related field.

Preferred Education : Not specified.

Required Experience : Four (4) years of relevant work experience in web development with technologies used at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Must have experience in procedural and object‑oriented languages (such as Coldfusion, Java, SQL), web programming tools and version control software. Knowledge of relational database design concepts, data models and SQL scripting. Understanding of internet security issues such as firewall, SSL encryption, secure coding and authentication (LDAP).

Preferred Experience : Experience using JavaScript libraries (JQuery, YUI), presentation layer frameworks and MVC frameworks. Experience in the design and development of enterprise web applications, including front‑end design, application server and database design.

Skills : Proficiency in modern web technologies, web standards, HTML, CSS, XML, XHTML, XSLT, JavaScript, AJAX, graphic design, web multimedia and cross‑browser and cross‑platform issues. General understanding of HTTP, web services architecture (REST, JSON), APIs, SDKs, web servers (IIS, Apache, Tomcat) on various operating systems, content management systems and portals.

Ability to work some weekends and/or evenings as required. Occasional travel required. Effective verbal and written communication skills with both non‑technical and technical users. Detail oriented, self‑motivated and able to prioritize and coordinate multiple projects within deadlines and work independently or as part of a team.

To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.
