Community Services Coordinator

The position serves as a Community Services Coordinator in the Los Alamitos Recreation and Community Services Department and is responsible for assisting in the formulation of a variety of recreation & community services programs including but not limited to: senior programs and events, aquatics, youth and adult sports, Summer Parks Programs, citywide special events, community services, marketing, and more.
This is a part-time position that works approximately (10-40) hours per week depending on season/program with a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and selected holidays for City events or programs.
There is currently one (1) opening in the following areas: Senior Programs & Events, Special Events and Decor.
Essential Job Functions

Under the direction of the Recreation & Community Services Department, the part-time Community Services Coordinator is required to perform the following essential job functions:
Plan, organize, implement, and coordinate recreation, sports and/or aquatic programs for youth, teens, adults, and/or seniors.
Provide outreach through initiating, designing, producing, and distributing a variety of promotional, marketing, informational materials, graphic design and social media marketing.
Provide excellent customer service.
Assist in the planning, organization, and implementation of community-wide special events.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; develop written reports; assist in budget preparation; obtain sponsorships and perform other duties as assigned.
Assist in the supervision, training, and evaluation of personnel.
Prepare reports, news releases, and marketing materials.
Be able to lift over their head, twist & turn a minimum of 20 pounds.
Be able to stand for a long period of time either indoors or outdoors.
Perform other duties and assignments as assigned
Desirable Experience and Training

A minimum of two (2) years of college, including course work in recreation, human services, or a related field and/or a minimum of two (2) years of responsible higher level recreation programming experience in a municipal recreation department.
Experience working with older adults and/or senior programming/events is preferred. Experience working large-scale special events with an emphasis on event dcor is preferred.
Certification in First Aid, CPR, AED required upon hired or within four weeks of hiring.
Valid California Driver's License.
For aquatics position:
Must obtain American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
Possession of Water Safety Instructor certification preferred but not required

The nature of the job requires strong communication skills to maintain rapport with participants, local businesses, non-profits, and the general public.
The ideal candidate will be flexible, energetic, outgoing, creative, & enjoy working with people of all ages.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent interpersonal, time management and organizational skills to accomplish their job.
The ideal candidate should possess working knowledge of coordinating and directing a variety of recreation programming, including experience in working with a wide range of recreational programs including but not limited to aquatics, day camp, parks program, preschool, youth programs, staff-led classes, youth and adult sports, older adult programming, and/or special events.
Work effectively with the public, including, but not limited to market recreation programs and classes
Demonstrate effective customer service while promoting the organizational values of the City
Follow written and oral directions, while exercising initiative and independence
Establish and maintain positive, team-oriented working relationships with other City employees
Be able to work a flexible work schedule including weekend, evening, and holiday hours
For aquatics positions:
Knowledge and understanding of current American Red Cross Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor requirements;
Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment involved in the maintenance and operation of swimming pools;
Physical and Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Mobility: The position requires sufficient mobility to work in an office setting and operate office equipment. The position may require light lifting and carrying, filing documents (minimum of 25 pounds) in various locations and at various heights, and sitting, standing, walking, remaining seated, and working at a video display terminal for prolonged periods. This position works outdoors at events and may carry equipment (minimum 35 pounds).
Vision: Vision sufficient to read small print, computer screens, and printed documents, and to operate assigned equipment.
Hearing: The position is required to hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
Environment: The position works in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances.
Other factors: The position may be required to work extended hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. The position may require the use of a personal vehicle during employment.
