Electrical Maintenance Technician

Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled electrical maintenance and repair activities on all street lights and traffic signals throughout the City. Determines the most appropriate manner in which to perform the operations in carrying out assigned tasks. May work independently, as a team member or as a crew leader over Traffic Maintenance Technicians and seasonal temporary employees and private contractors carrying out work crew activities.
Responsible for the quality and accuracy of his/her own work. Responsible for the care and safe operation of a variety of equipment with high monetary value, responsible for leading a work crew of Traffic Technicians and seasonal temporary employees and private contractors carrying out crew activities.
Primary Responsibilities

Troubleshoots, diagnoses and conducts repairs and maintenance on street lights and faulty cables when malfunctions occur and determines appropriate method of correction.
Troubleshoots and conducts repairs and maintenance of traffic signals.
Performs cable maintenance and services as requested.
Assists in new construction projects for traffic signals and street lights.
Sets up proper lane closures for work areas according to established guidelines or coordinate traffic control to ensure safety.
Maintains inventory of equipment, tools and supplies including poles, fixtures, wires, lamps, connectors, traffic signal equipment, etc.
Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.
Provides work instruction to crews of regular Traffic Maintenance Technicians, seasonal/temporary workers and private contractors regarding tasks to be performed; Ensures that each employee:
Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices.
Serves on an on-call list for afterhours response needs.
Performs other duties and activities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

The job requires an associate's degree in electrical technology or a closely related field and five or more years of experience in the installation of traffic signals, three or more years of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of street lights, and electrical equipment and components; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. A valid State of North Dakota Journeyman Electrician's license is required. This job also requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement or the ability to obtain within 9 months of employment through the City of Fargo's CDL training program.
Must attain IMSA (International Municipal Signal Association) certification for work zone and Traffic Signal Level I within one year; Traffic Signal Level II within two years; and Traffic Signal Level III within three years.
Knowledge, skills and abilities include:
Knowledge of electrical theory;
Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (N.E.C.);
Knowledge of the principles, concepts and procedures of installing, maintaining and repairing electrical equipment and systems;
Knowledge of MUTCD
Knowledge of relays and control voltage
Skill in the proper and safe installation, maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and systems;
Skill in the location of cables and faults;
Skill in mathematical computation to carry out repair and installation duties;
Skill in written English sufficient to read and interpret technical manual, specifications, and blueprints;
Skill in communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills;
Skill in basic computer operation.
Skill in the proper and safe operation of a line truck and bucket truck
Physical Demands

Almost all work is performed outside (90% of time) near streets and roadways. Work is generally very heavy and involves lifting smaller poles and fixtures weighing up to 150 pounds. Daily work involves driving a line truck or bucket truck with pole trailer to locations needing service. There is frequent exposure to multiple disagreeable working conditions and hazards such as extreme weather conditions, traffic and equipment noise and fumes, dirt, moving traffic, glass shards, aerial work at heights up to 60 feet operating the bucket truck or eight to ten feet on a ladder, and in underground trenches to five feet deep, with appropriate safety equipment; frequently works with electricity, conduit boxes, power lines, hand and power tools, acetylene torches, gas saws, wire pullers, meters, locators, fault finders; occasionally operates a forklift. The job may involve dealing with and referring individuals who are emotionally charged over an issue. There is moderate attention to detail and deadlines.
Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, repetitive motions.
Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
