Position Summary

The Band Director is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating the district's instrumental music program. The Band Director provides high-quality instruction that promotes musical excellence, academic achievement, leadership, discipline, creativity, and personal growth while representing the school and district with professionalism.

The Band Director oversees all aspects of the band program, including concert band, marching band, pep band, jazz band (if applicable), middle school feeder programs, student recruitment, performances, competitions, equipment management, and community engagement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Program Leadership
Develop and maintain a comprehensive instrumental music program aligned from middle school through high school.
Establish annual goals for program growth and student achievement.
Foster a culture of excellence, discipline, teamwork, and pride.
Promote participation and retention in the band program.
Instruction
Plan and deliver engaging, standards-based music instruction.
Teach music theory, instrumental techniques, sight-reading, and performance skills.
Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs.
Assess student performance and provide timely feedback.
Prepare students for concerts, festivals, contests, and other performances.
Marching Band and Performances
Plan, organize, and direct marching band rehearsals and performances.
Coordinate halftime performances, parades, community events, and school functions.
Prepare students for district, regional, and state competitions.
Ensure performances reflect professionalism and school pride.
Student Development
Promote leadership, responsibility, discipline, and teamwork.
Encourage academic achievement and monitor student eligibility.
Foster positive relationships with students and families.
Support students' musical and personal development.
Program Administration
Maintain an accurate inventory of instruments, uniforms, music, and equipment.
Ensure proper care, maintenance, repair, and storage of instruments and equipment.
Coordinate instrument checkout procedures.
Maintain music library and instructional materials.
Budget and Financial Management
Develop and manage the annual band budget.
Recommend purchases of instruments, uniforms, music, and equipment.
Maintain financial accountability for all band funds.
Coordinate fundraising activities in accordance with district policies.
Staff Supervision

When applicable:
Supervise assistant band directors, percussion instructors, color guard instructors, and volunteers.
Coordinate responsibilities for rehearsals and performances.
Provide mentoring and leadership to instructional staff.
Community and Parent Relations
Maintain positive communication with parents and guardians.
Promote community support for the band program.
Coordinate booster activities in accordance with district policy.
Represent the district professionally at all performances and public events.
Compliance

Ensure compliance with:
District policies and procedures
Mississippi Department of Education requirements
Mississippi High School Activities Association (when applicable)
Copyright laws regarding music
Student eligibility requirements
Safety procedures during rehearsals and travel
Student Supervision
Supervise students during rehearsals, performances, competitions, travel, and school-sponsored events.
Ensure appropriate student behavior and safety.
Coordinate transportation and event logistics with school administration.
Professional Responsibilities
Participate in required professional development.
Remain current on instructional methods and music education best practices.
Collaborate with faculty and administration.
Support school-wide activities and initiatives.
Required Qualifications
Valid Mississippi Educator License with appropriate endorsement in Instrumental Music.
Ability to direct marching and concert bands.
Knowledge of music education curriculum and instructional practices.
Strong organizational and leadership skills.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Successful experience directing a middle or high school band program.
Experience with marching band competitions and festival preparation.
Experience supervising assistant directors or instructional staff.
Experience managing budgets and equipment inventories.
Demonstrated success in increasing student participation and achievement.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:
Stand for extended periods during rehearsals and performances.
Conduct rehearsals using repetitive arm movements.
Lift and move musical instruments and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Travel with student groups for performances and competitions.
