Public Relations Coordinator

Truscott Rossman · Detroit, MI, USA ·

Pay:
$45,000-$55,000/yr
Job type:
Full Time

Position Overview
Truscott Rossman is hiring a PR Coordinator to help power the day-to-day work of our team across Michigan. This is an entry-level role and a genuine launch pad: you’ll do real, hands‑on communications work from day one—writing, monitoring, pitching, and preparing the materials for our clients—while an experienced team teaches you the craft and helps you grow.

It’s tactical work, but tactical doesn’t mean simple. Not everything will come with a clear playbook; you’ll often be handed a goal and asked to figure out a smart way there, with plenty of people around you to ask, learn from, and solve problems with. What matters most isn’t what you’ve done before, it’s how you think, how you write, and how eager you are to get better.

You’ll also be one of the first people watching the news each morning, learning to spot what matters and flag it for the team. Based in the Detroit metro area, you’ll get to know the region’s media ecosystem—the outlets, the reporters, and the rhythms—from the ground up.

At Truscott Rossman, we operate using the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), a proven framework that ensures clarity, accountability, and alignment across all levels of our agency. EOS helps us set clear goals, prioritize tasks, and solve problems effectively, empowering every team member to thrive in a collaborative and results‑oriented environment. You will benefit from the structure of clearly defined roles and measurable goals, which provide the support and focus needed to excel in a fast‑paced, multi‑client communications agency. Our EOS‑driven culture fosters teamwork, transparency, and professional growth.

Salary Range
$45,000-$55,000

What you’ll be accountable for
Public Relations & Media Support
The hands‑on PR and media tasks that keep our clients’ work moving, guided by the public relations and public affairs team and account leads. Take real pride in the quality of what you produce, hit your deadlines, and bring a problem‑solver’s resourcefulness to assignments that don’t arrive with a map. You won’t be setting strategy or running the client relationship—you’ll be the reliable teammate who takes direction and turns it into excellent, finished work.

Content Development
Help create the material that carries our clients’ voices: op‑eds, talking points, media pitches, press releases, and briefing materials. Learn to turn complex issues into clear, compelling, and placeable writing, and to find the angle when it isn’t obvious. You’ll get plenty of coaching—what we’re looking for is strong instincts and a willingness to revise, sharpen, and grow.

Morning Monitoring & Rapid Response
Help own the early‑day media monitoring and reporting, with particular focus on a high‑profile account that needs close daily attention. Track regular client coverage and prioritize what really matters to the client and translate it into a detailed, organized report for the team. Dive into a clear process that flags important stories for the team in a timely manner. It’s tactical work that sharpens your instincts; it can make you the person who knows the media world better than anyone.

Media, Influencer & Industry Relationship Development
Start building genuine working relationships with reporters, editors, influencers, and industry contacts across Detroit, Southeast Michigan, and beyond. Learn who covers what, keep contact lists current and useful, and help open doors for the stories your team is working to place. Every positive interaction is a chance to represent TR as a credible, reliable partner.

Continuous Learning & Emerging Tools
Stay curious and keep learning. Get hands‑on with new tools—including AI—new platforms, and evolving best practices in communications, and share what you discover with the team. The field changes fast, and we want someone genuinely excited to grow with it.

How this role works
We take the 40‑hour week seriously, and we’ve built this role so the early hours are a feature, not a tax. Your day runs from about 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM most days—an early start balanced by an early finish. If additional hours are required outside of this window, we will work with you to accommodate appropriately. We’d rather have you sharp and sustainable than stretched thin.

What we’re looking for

Strong writing instincts and a real willingness to revise and improve—your ability and attitude matter far more than the length of your résumé.

A knack for taking direction and following through, turning a clear brief into finished, reliable work.

Resourcefulness: when a path isn’t handed to you, you look for a smart one—and you know when and how to ask for help.

Eagerness to learn the craft of PR and media in a fast‑moving, multi‑client agency.

Based in Detroit or Southeast Michigan, with familiarity with—and curiosity about—the regional media ecosystem: the outlets, the reporters, and how news travels here.

Comfort with (and ideally enthusiasm for) an early start and a shared after‑hours on‑call rotation.

Curiosity about new tools, including AI, and the drive to keep getting better.

Reporting Structure
This role reports to the Director of Corporate and Executive Communications.

Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is early in their career and eager to prove it—a strong writer who is genuinely good at taking direction and turning it into excellent, finished work. Handed an unclear problem, they look for a smart path and aren’t afraid to ask questions along the way. They’re driven without being self‑important, quick on their feet, and at their best when they’re making the team look good. An early start energizes them, and they’re excited to learn the Detroit media landscape and the people in it.

We hire against our five core values: ignite individual genius, demand growth and excellence, do the right thing, keep open minds, and show up for teamwork. If that sounds like you, we’d like to meet you.
