Summary
The Senior Interior Design Director is an experienced creative and operational leader responsible for setting the vision, standards, and execution of interior design across multiple publishing imprints including Berkley, Dutton, Putnam, Tarcher, Avery, Tiny Rep, and Plume. This role oversees a high-volume publishing program of approximately 600+ titles per year while directly managing a team of 11 designers and associate design directors. As a working manager, the Senior Director balances leadership responsibilities with an active design workload.

Responsibilities

Lead and mentor a team of designers and associate design directors, fostering a high-performing, collaborative environment

Allocate and balance workload across the team, ensuring efficiency and sustainable pacing

Review, guide, and approve design work, ensuring alignment with imprint identity and market positioning

Partner with publishers, editors, and authors to shape and execute creative vision

Serve as the primary design liaison to Editorial, Production, Production Editorial, Managing Editorial, and external partners

Collaborate and lead on workflow improvements, art processes, and production efficiencies

Manage freelance and external vendor relationships

Responsible for designing approximately 30 titles

Qualifications

10+ years as a book designer (or similar) with experience in managing imprints and high volume

Experience supervising and art directing a design team with at least 6 staff

Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)

Solid understanding of typography, layout, and color theory

Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment

Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines

Excellent knowledge of prepress and print reproduction

Additional Information
This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities (approximately 3 days a week). Candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, and NY), will be considered.

The salary range for this position is $115,000 - $140,000. All positions are currently eligible for an annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
