Job Description Summary
Role Summary: This officer position is responsible for underwriting excellence, product development and enhancement, and oversight through strategic leadership and direction for the Standard Commercial Casualty (CL) and Business Auto (BA) lines of business. The role directs the development and implementation of strategic and operational objectives for the Standard CL and BA lines in line with Nationwide's Commercial strategic plans. It also identifies new, innovative Commercial products and enhancements, supporting the Enterprise and Commercial Lines business strategy, including research and execution of new product development that aligns with technology, industry trends, and customer needs — including Telematics, User Based Insurance (UBI), and the Internet of Things (IOT).

Key Responsibilities
Develops strategic and operational objectives with significant impact on short-term success for the CL Casualty and BA lines; maintains and executes underwriting guidelines and product management best practices to ensure portfolio integrity across channels; leads exploration and delivery of innovative product solutions and enhancements for Standard CL to enable profitable growth.
Sets strategic and operational objectives for the Standard CL Casualty and BA, and for product development and enhancements; maintains and executes underwriting guidelines and product management practices to ensure portfolio integrity across channels.
Leads, directs, and maintains accountability for staff, emphasizing talent development and succession planning; collaborates with Lines of Business, Segments, Underwriting Services, Loss Control, Pricing, Claims, Distribution, and Compliance to address governance, processing, and compliance issues related to Casualty and BA underwriting and product practices.
Leads product development and enhancement efforts for Standard Commercial, focusing on external market conditions, technology advances, and consumer trends impacting CL underwriting and product; provides direction for underwriting authority delegation and audit criteria; responsible for audit results and action plans; conducts research and analysis to recommend Standard CL insurance products; assimilates industry trends and contributes to training and development curricula for Casualty, BA, and new products.
Breadth Across Enterprise
The leader of Casualty, BA, and Product Development is responsible for underwriting strategy, product development, and execution across all Standard CL distribution channels and will influence culture, rules, processes, and product development to ensure profitability. This role interfaces with and influences leadership and key stakeholders and includes researching, assessing, and executing new product development aligned with technology and trends (including Telematics, UBI, and IOT).
Financial Responsibility and Scope
Responsible for $2B in Direct Written Premium (DWP). Accountable for top and bottom-line performance of Casualty and BA lines and for newly developed or enhanced products. Drives growth and profitability through Standard CL product enhancement, development, and execution.
Leadership Accountability
Developing Strategy:
Develops the Standard CL Casualty and BA underwriting and product development strategy to meet Nationwide’s goals and the One Nationwide model (one product, one contract, one company); leads the strategic build-out of CL Casualty and BA, including roadmaps for underwriting, pricing, modeling, and loss control; merges CL UW into One Nationwide and a national underwriting organization; leads all Standard CL product development and enhancement initiatives.
Providing Input on Strategic Direction:
Serves as the senior underwriting SME and provides input to the strategic direction for Standard CL Underwriting, with focus on CL Casualty and BA lines and product development and enhancement.
Executing Strategy:
Leads teams to develop and execute underwriting guidelines and best practices; leads product development and enhancement teams researching, creating, and executing enhanced or new products to support profitable growth; coordinates with run underwriting teams to ensure strategy execution; builds centralized underwriting and product development teams to support all distribution channels and CL segmentation; has overall P&L responsibility for Casualty, BA, and related products.
Team Composition
Composition includes multiple Directors, Senior Consultants, Consultants, Product Managers, and Associate Product Managers. Dedicated product innovation resources are included as part of the team.
Typical Skills and Experiences
Education/Certification/Licenses:
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred in a related discipline; Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation preferred; minimum of 12 years of related work experience with 7 years of management experience.
Experience/Skills:
Mastery of underwriting discipline, preferably in Commercial Underwriting; strong communication, relationship-building, and collaboration skills; leadership and management capabilities; ability to drive results and resolve significant problems; senior-level knowledge of the insurance industry; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Other criteria, including leadership competencies and experiences, may take precedence. Staffing exceptions require approval by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.
