Overview

Pre-Sentence Investigation Writer – Havre Region, MT (26141783). The Montana Department of Corrections (DOC) seeks a Pre-Sentence Investigation Writer to conduct pre-sentence investigations and risk assessments, and to make recommendations addressing the risks and needs of offenders. This role supports the Public Safety Division, Probation and Parole Bureau, and the department’s mission to create a safer Montana through accountability, rehabilitation and empowerment.

Responsibilities

Conduct pre-sentence investigations and risk
eed assessments for offenders, under the order of district court judges.

Use motivational interviewing and authorized instruments to assess risk and needs; develop and communicate sentencing and placement recommendations.

Interview offenders, victims, witnesses, and other relevant individuals; document information for the Pre-Sentence Investigation Report.

Develop reports, coordinate with criminal justice agencies, and apply knowledge of laws and regulations related to probation, parole, incarceration, rehabilitation and treatment programs.

Gather information for Pre-Sentence Investigation Reports (PSI) and Reports of Violation (ROV); ensure reports are accurate and properly formatted.

Distribute approved reports and ensure compliance with court-ordered conditions; identify public safety risks.

Appear in court on “Law & Motion” days when necessary to obtain dates and information for PSI/ROV reports.

Testify in court as needed to verify information contained in reports.

Track offender reporting schedules and deadlines; document offender chronos in OMIS; monitor supervision standards.

Determine interstate compact eligibility based on safety, treatment plans, residence, and receiving state regulations.

Obtain and calculate restitution, court costs and supervision fees; coordinate with county attorneys and clerks of court as needed.

Enter offender information into OMIS/OMP and assign DOC numbers; collect and compile statistical data and generate reports for appropriate personnel and agencies.

Assist in obtaining and filing documentation for PSI/ROV; gather police records as needed.

Receive and process information on DOC commits; coordinate with records department as required.

Qualifications

Typically requires an associate degree in criminology, human behavior and social work or related fields, and two years of law enforcement or public safety experience.

Higher education in criminology, human behavior and social work plus two years of relevant experience is preferred; or a combination of higher education and experience.

The successful candidate must be able to type 40 words per minute (wpm).
