Summary:

An Ophthalmic Photographer is a valuable asset to an Ophthalmologist, assisting in providing excellent patient care during visits. The Photographer handles a range of duties using equipment to perform initial testing and prepare a patient for an exam with an Ophthalmologist. Ophthalmic Photographers perform ophthalmic techniques to examine and document a patient’s pathology/anomaly with high-quality photographs for documentation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Color stereo Retinal Fundus photography and Serial Stereo Retinal Intravenous Fluorescein Angiography skills, including IV start up and dye administration.
External ocular photography and performs OCT on patients with speed and accuracy; may assist Physicians with treatments when needed.
Proficient in ophthalmic terminology, accurate typing and knowledge of Electronic Medical Records (EMR); may be required to scribe for Physicians if needed.
Review patient medical and ophthalmic history, including medications, allergies and family history of eye problems.
Identify potential patient concerns and bring them to the attention of the Office Coordinator or Physician as appropriate.
Measure and record distance and near visual acuity and pinhole acuity; perform preliminary refraction using objective equipment.
Measure intraocular pressures by tonometry methods; check pupillary response to light and pupillary defects.
Perform basic visual field testing and provide patient education as directed by Physician.
Prepare patients for treatments and minor procedures; measure and record vital signs as required.
Instill eye drops as directed by the Physician and assist in applying dressings, shields and eye patches.
Maintain cleanliness and stocking of examination, treatment, laser and other rooms, including medication logs and inventories up to date.
Become certified for photography services required for study participation.
Responsible for proper handling of all equipment and assist with maintenance and repairs when necessary.
Encourage obtaining certification as Certified Retinal Angiographer (CRA).
Proficient keyboarding skills, EMR and image management system usage.
Utilize electronic mail and other instant messaging systems.
May consent patient for treatment and procedures; assist with patient transfers as necessary and travel to other locations as assigned.

Must be able to provide proof of identity and right to work in the United States.
Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
Licenses and Credentials

Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification preferred.
Systems and Technology

Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Physical Requirements

Role involves varied physical activity: walking, sitting, standing; bending, stooping, reaching; ability to lift up to 25 lbs; fine motor skills and use of hands for grasping, writing/typing, and technology use; visual and auditory acuity required; occasional driving or climbing may be necessary.
