Coordinator of Specialized Programs (SBO)

Overview

The Specialized Programs Coordinator is responsible for the coordination, training, and support of specialized programs designed to address the needs of students with significant disabilities who are educated within and/or outside of the general education classroom. The coordinator advises school and special education leadership about special education programs to ensure that the needs of all students are being met. The role focuses on helping children with disabilities maximize their learning in inclusive settings and developing innovative new school programs aimed at implementing specialized supports. The coordinator ensures the quality and integrity of all aspects of the programs.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with staff members and teachers from various departments to plan short- or long-term special services for children with significant needs, utilizing strong decision-making, public relations, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Coordinate the adaptive curriculum, including training teaching staff, monitoring student progress, and implementing new programs to address student and staff needs.

Oversee the implementation of the Virginia Alternative Assessment Program, including training staff.

Establish and maintain communication with parents of students in the program.

Support the planning and implementation of special education initiatives; integrate new developments, research findings, and best practices into ongoing programs and new initiatives.

Collaborate with VCU ACE regarding training updates for staff supporting students with significant needs.

Coordinate the coaching of teachers of students with autism, significant needs, and/or functional academic needs in the implementation of evidence-based practices; develop a system of support for special and general education teachers in the use of these practices.

Qualifications

Postgraduate Professional Certificate.

Minimum of three years' experience teaching in special education.

Supervisory experience preferred, but not required.

Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, practices, procedures, programs, regulations and policies of special education; knowledge of best practices in autism, VAAP testing, teaching methodology, behavior management of students with disabilities, and the general education curriculum for students ages 2–21.

Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships within the school and community.

Ability to communicate effectively with teachers, parents, and representatives of other agencies; ability to work as a team member in determining appropriate services for children through meetings such as eligibility meetings, triennials, and IEPs.

Ability to assist special education teachers in the implementation of technology in the educational environment.

Special Requirements
Candidates must demonstrate qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with pupils, teachers, and parents. They should be able to organize and present workshops related to the provision of special education and specialized services for instructional staff. Knowledge of special education laws and regulations is required.

Physical Demands/Requirements
Duties are typically performed in school settings including offices, conference centers, and classrooms. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting of up to approximately 20 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment and materials weighing up to approximately 40 pounds. Other limited physical activities are required. Frequent operation of a vehicle and office equipment is required. Regular and frequent contact is made at all organizational levels. Vocal communication, hearing, and visual acuity are required for job performance. Regular contact with students with special needs, building administrators, staff, and parents is expected. Frequent contact with parents and staff by phone and in person may be necessary.

Pay Rate
The salary range is $92,644–$152,559.

Contract
Full time / 12 months / 245 days.

Start Date
This position is effective for the 2026–2027 school year.
