University Photographer
Under the direct supervision of the senior photographer, this position is responsible for capturing high-quality images that align with Old Dominion University’s brand and marketing goals. This photographer will also produce story‑driven images that reflect the full range of activities at Old Dominion University for use in marketing efforts, Monarch Magazine, the ODU website, and other media.

The role will work closely with marketing, design, and creative teams to plan photoshoots, brainstorm concepts, and deliver compelling visual content. The photographer will also take pictures at university events and activities, often scheduled at evenings and weekends. Primary duties include preparing for editorial photoshoots, editing images, maintaining an archive in a digital asset management system, and packaging images for final deliverables. Professionalism, timeliness, and the willingness to travel to different locations for photoshoots are required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Working knowledge of computer software including Lightroom, Photoshop, digital asset management (DAM), and Microsoft Office.

Exceptional oral and written communication skills.

Demonstrated skill with digital and mirrorless cameras, particularly DSLR systems such as the Nikon Z7ii.

Experience with photographic studio and in‑field lighting techniques including white balance, color correction, and flash.

Proficiency in marketing photography for advertising and magazines.

Ability to work effectively in a team setting to achieve goals.

Expertise in photo editing software.

Strong relationship‑building skills with university departments, faculty, staff, students, external vendors, agencies, and contacts.

Capacity to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Excellent attention to detail, with a keen eye for composition, lighting, and storytelling through images.

Level and Type of Experience

Significant experience working with internal and external clients to create photo content for advertising, books, magazines, brochures, newsletters, webpages, social media, and other publications.

Experience planning and organizing a variety of marketing photoshoots.

Experience in location scouting and providing direction for photography.

Additional Considerations

Prior experience in higher education marketing.

AP‑style photo caption writing and related software such as Grammarly and Chat GPT.

Experience with branding, marketing, and communications in a professional setting.

Conditions of Employment
