Responsibilities

Job Summary
The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nursing and the Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the patient population served. Responsibilities include recording patients’ medical history and symptoms, performing diagnostic tests, analyzing results, operating medical equipment, administering treatment and medications, and assisting with patient follow‑up and rehabilitation.
The RN establishes or contributes to a care plan that may include activities such as administering medication (with careful dosage checks and interaction avoidance), starting, maintaining, and discontinuing intravenous lines for fluids, medications, blood, and blood products, administering therapies and treatments, observing and documenting patient status, and consulting with physicians and other clinicians.
The RN teaches patients and families how to manage illnesses or injuries, explains post‑treatment and home care needs, diet, nutrition, exercise, and self‑administration of medication and therapy.
The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides regarding patient care and delegates when appropriate, supports efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills, precepts new hire staff and students, and assists them in achieving competency. The RN continues to enhance knowledge in nursing management and patient care.
The RN may continue to improve the patient experience and clinical outcomes, works to promote a healthy work environment, and supports nursing practices that are theory‑based and evidence‑based within a Shared Governance model.
All RN staff with direct responsibility for stroke patients must have knowledge of:
Stroke symptoms and warning signs
Protocols and pathways used to identify, evaluate and manage stroke patients
NIHSS
Stroke Alert activation and protocol
Stroke quality indicators
Available stroke patient education materials and community resources
Educational requirements
Stroke Center website resources
Essential Functions

Possess the knowledge of how to collect health data systematically and continuously, prioritize data collection based on patient condition and family involvement, analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses, and use nursing diagnoses to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise appropriate patient care plans that are family‑centered, developmentally and age‑appropriate, and culturally relevant.
Identify expected outcomes tailored to the patient’s specific health problems. Implement interventions, initiate treatments, medications, and emergency measures in line with standing orders, policies, and procedures. Provide nursing care that addresses physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs using a family‑centered approach. Evaluate patient progress and document observations, interventions, therapeutic measures, and monitoring data in a retrievable format. Continuously evaluate quality and effectiveness of the care plan to maintain cost‑effective high‑quality care. Maintain current knowledge in nursing practice, evaluate practice in relation to professional standards and regulations, and actively engage in professional development locally, regionally, and nationally.
Education & Certifications

Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) – Preferred
All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have 5 or more years of Registered Nurse experience at time of hire
Required Associate’s degree or Diploma in Nursing
All staff with direct responsibility for stroke patients must refer to the addendum for stroke‑specific education requirements – PRIOR TO START
Required Experience

>10+ months in a medical‑surgical or acute specialty setting
1 year RN experience for all float positions
Licenses & Certifications

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and BLS training course completion
Unit‑specific certification as required by specialty area (DOP)
Registered Nurse (RN) state or compact state licensure in Arizona upon hire
National certification for unit‑specific patient populations (Required)
Additional Requirements
