Designer, Visual Storytelling

The Wall Street Journal is seeking an experienced designer to join an award‑winning team and drive innovative storytelling for digital readers. The role involves creating modular and reusable components, as well as bespoke visual experiences across photography, illustration, data visualizations, and long‑form text.
Responsibilities

Work closely with the Digital Design Editor to prioritize stories that require special visual direction, ranging from rapid turnaround to longer enterprise work.
Collaborate with reporters, editors, and other visual journalists to generate ideas and build stories for digital audiences across WSJ platforms and external platforms.
Demonstrate excellent news judgment and sound technical approaches while staying ahead of visual trends and techniques applicable to evolving digital storytelling.
Work quickly and efficiently when deadlines are tight, including occasional work outside regular office hours.
Qualifications

At least three years of experience in an equivalent role with a strong understanding of news media and digital publishing.
Superior skills in interaction design, layout, color, and typography across digital platforms.
Experience with front‑end development and modern web technologies such as React, Handlebars, or Tailwind CSS.
Experience with storyboarding and prototyping tools for designing visual stories, e.g., Figma.
Familiarity with best practices for building stories for mobile devices.
Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator and ai2html.
A passion for journalism and innovation.

Compensation and Benefits

Base Pay Range: $110,000 – $130,000. Bonus‑eligible roles have targets determined by market benchmarks and individual contributions.
