Organization: Mabuhay Gardens (via CrowdDoing)
Initiative: Heritage & Cultural Programming
Location: Hybrid — remote-friendly with optional on-site visits
Type: Volunteer, service-learning
Commitment: Flexible, part-time, ongoing
Reports into: Mabuhay Programming Curator
About the initiative
Mabuhay Gardens is a storied cultural venue with a legendary history. The building has hosted performances by legends including Louis Armstrong, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Dead Kennedys, Iggy Pop, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Specials, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Herbie Hancock, R.E.M., Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Soundgarden, Bad Religion, Dave Chappelle, and many others. Via CrowdDoing, we are regenerating the Mab as a hybrid cultural ecosystem: live music, dance, comedy, rentals, popup culinary lab, off-peak wellness partnerships, art-walk activations, and solarpunk / regenerative-culture programming.
Public, college, and community radio stations have long been the connective tissue of Bay Area music history. We're looking for someone who understands this world well enough to build real, natural collaborations for co-programming, live broadcasts, and cultural cross-promotion.
The puzzle
Radio stations and live venues both thrive on discovering new work early, yet they rarely coordinate systematically. Public, college, and community stations each have their own personality, format, and relationship with listeners. The puzzle is learning each station's specific character well enough to shape collaborations that genuinely fit their programming.
What you'll do
- Station landscape mapping — Build a working map of public, college, and community radio stations whose programming could connect meaningfully with Mabuhay's live music, comedy, and cultural programming.
- Format and culture research — Study each station's shows, hosts, and programming philosophy closely enough to know which shows would genuinely want to collaborate.
- History and precedent research, with AI as a complement — Look into each station's history, current programming grid, and past venue partnerships.
- Noticing collaboration moments — Keep an eye on what stations and hosts are sharing publicly.
- Genuine conversations with hosts and programmers — Approach hosts and music directors with real curiosity about their shows first.
- Collaboration concept development and handoff — Shape concrete ideas for co-programming, live broadcasts, or in-studio sessions.
Who this role is for
Somebody with real, demonstrable skill in at least two of the following:
- Familiarity with public, college, or community radio ecosystems and how their programming decisions get made
- Experience with broadcast production, live sessions, or audio engineering
- A genuine understanding of media programmers' worlds and formats
- Research instincts for understanding a station's specific culture before making contact
- Curious mind: you love learning about radio history, station cultures, and how different formats find and keep an audience
- Openness to AI as a helpful complement
Why do this
- The problem matters: Live venues and radio stations both benefit from real coordination, but most partnerships never get past a generic idea.
- The stakes are real: The connections you build will shape real broadcasts and real live sessions.
- The craft (self-challenge): You'll learn to understand each station's culture deeply enough to propose something that truly fits.
- The room is legendary: You're helping regenerate a venue where legends across music, comedy, poetry, and cultural experimentation performed.
- Virtual collaboration with CrowdDoing's global network.
Time commitment & structure
- Flexible, part-time, mostly asynchronous
- Ongoing commitment, renewable
- Onboarding via CrowdDoing's standard volunteer orientation
How to apply
