Description
Build the streets that keep Flagstaff moving while making a visible impact in the community every single day. The City of Flagstaff Public Works team is seeking a Streets Operations Technician I to perform a wide variety of construction, maintenance, and repair work on City streets, easements, rights-of-way, and sidewalks. This hands-on position includes safely operating heavy Streets equipment such as 6/10 wheel trucks, cinder and plow units, front-end loaders, patch trucks, and steel wheel rollers; setting up safe traffic control work zones; completing accurate equipment and maintenance reports; striping and signing City-maintained streets; performing pavement maintenance and repair including asphalt, concrete, curb, gutter, and sidewalk work; assisting with landscape maintenance; and supporting critical snow and ice operations to keep Flagstaff safe year-round.
Responsibilities
Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
Safely perform a variety of construction, maintenance and repair work on city streets, easements, rights-of-way, curb & gutter, sidewalks & drainage; operate streets equipment such as 6/10-wheel trucks, cinder and plow units, front-end loaders, and heavy-duty equipment.
Operate more advanced equipment when needed (e.g., combination tractor-trailer, transport, motor grader, asphalt paving equipment, water truck, and striping machinery).
Aid and support a training program to promote skills to other employees.
Work independently and provide verbal and written instructions to others.
Read, implement, and complete work orders; maintain and track monthly reports; review engineering plans and perform construction walk-throughs.
Set up safe traffic control work zones and apply MUTCD standard practices.
Enforce proper PPE and safety in the work area; track work performed to meet performance standards; enter data into worksheets for tracking.
Prepare monthly reports and track expenditures; review and implement MAG specifications and City engineering standards.
Contribute to budget and planning processes; maintain street sign and markings inventory; order, receive, and stock materials.
Operate a forklift and transport supply truck as needed; form, place, and finish concrete products (curb/gutter and sidewalk panels).
Participate in snow operations and other Streets activities as assigned; initiate and follow up on blue stake measures.
Provide training and mentorship; supervise day-to-day activities for labor/equipment/materials as needed.
Assist with Cartegraph performance system, including oversight of data entry and work report uploads.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma
One (1) year of experience as a laborer in semi-skilled crafts involved in construction or building trades
One (1) year of equipment operation experience
Valid Arizona Class D driver’s license
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Valid Arizona Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
Traffic control training or certifications
Experience operating a dump truck, snowplow, loader and heavy-duty truck
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must possess, or obtain within six (6) months, a valid Arizona Class B CDL
Maintains effective working relationships with internal and external customers and co-workers
Regular attendance is an essential function of this job
Fluctuating work schedules and flexibility to accommodate snow operations and other duties
Respond to emergencies and perform duties during evenings, weekends, and 12-hour shifts as required
